Fourtrak 2.8 TDL

Forum:

Hello Chaps,

I have recently bought a 1995 Fourtrak Fieldman TDL and have a few questions..

Firstly,

I would like to bypass the auto hubs COMPLETELY, put manual hubs on it and remove all the electrics and suction feed pipes etc as much as possible

Could anybody give me some sound advice on the best way to modify this please?

It has a manual 2L/4H/4L stick so im guessing I can use that to manualy engage 4wd and have aisin manual hubs.

Secondly,

Will a Goodrich 31 x 10.5 x 15 Mud Terrain go on the original rims or a 15 x 8 rim ok without rubbing on full lock?

I own a couple of Mk3 Toyota Hilux's, one of which I have completely rebuilt and restored so im sure I can complete the work here myself but some guidance would be appreciated on the Fourtrak as I have never owned one before.

Cheers

Its as simple as unbolting

Its as simple as unbolting the auto hubs and their associated bits and bolting on new manual items, about 10 minutes per side, but why replace them? if they are working all they need is a little maintaining annually.

What are the electrics and suction pipes you refer to? if these are the hubs then they don't have any as they work on relative motion of the driveshafts and nothing else. There are no pipes or electrics to operate them.

You can fit 31 X 10.5 X 15 without issues, you will need to adjust the steering stops which is an easy job to do.

you will need to remove your

you will need to remove your mudflaps as 31's hit them
31's should not hit the chassis on full lock
what wheels have you got on yours??

if you have a 2wd/4wd hi and 4wd low on the tbox stick you wont have any electrics or vac pipes to selcet 4wd

Sorry for being thick....

Ive just picked the fourtrak up today and realised, my mate has one and I had a look under his without realising that his has no stick shift when I posted.

I just assumed his had one without looking in the cab and they were built the same. The good point is it saves me a job or two.

The front hubs on the fourtrak I have bought are not engaging, the guy I bought it from recently had the front discs and calipers changed and since it was done both the front hubs dont engage, im assuming it wasnt put back together properly.... the truck goes into four wheel drive and all the shafts spin but no drive at the point of the hubs.

The wheels on it are the standard 15 x 7 rims, I have a spare set of goodrich 31 x 10.5 x 15 KM1 mud terrains here to go on them, I am tempted to buy a new set of 15 x 8 steels and swap the wheels and tyres altogether to be honest.

I have a few 15 x 8 rims and aisin hubs here but they are all six stud....

Other than that the trucks in good nick, hardly any rust, 90 k on the clock and long mot and tax.

My mate wanted 500 quid for it as he has recently upgraded to a posher vehicle and needed it out the way, no other reason for him selling it, he used it for work daily.I bought it out of pure curiosity rather than anything else and the missus liked it.

Shes asking me for back seats for the kids.. will the bench seat from an independent of the same year bolt straight in..?

Ive got mig and plasma here if I should need it.

Im sure I will have loads more questions as I work on it but for now im just enjoying the driving change from the hilux's, fourtraks a bit spongy in comparison but I like the extra grunt compared to the 2.4 non turbo diesels in the hilux's.

Cheers chaps.

if you brought a fairly rust

if you brought a fairly rust free indy for 500, you could sell it tomorrow for 1500-2000, check the wheel arches internally thoroughly, the muds will prob rub on an indy though without any lift, you want all manual drivetrain parts really for total reliability. You'll find all bolt holes etc inside for seats already there, just need the parts.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

I dont like rust

Thanks for your reply.

I dont want to sell the truck to be honest mate, its not the reason I bought it.

Ive checked the front arches, middle and rear sills and there is minimal rust on any of it. The guy I bought it off looked after it.

I have a couple of spare solid front axles here from mk3 hilux's.... im thinking I might just weld some leaf spring mounts into the chassis of the fourtrak and just swap the complete axle rather than mess about...

Would be easier to lift the truck that way im thinking.

Ive just done a rear disc mod on the rear axle of my hilux so im thinking just swap the rear axle the same... eh?

At least then I would have 6 studs on each wheel if nothing else...

Right on
