Yrv speaker woes

Forum:

Thought I would have a go at changing the speakers on the car today. Kinda went tits up.

Got the front off easily enough, but the ones I bought the magnet is far too big so they wont fit in Sad

So took the front door card off, seems I have no speaker wires there?

So took the rear door card off, removed the speaker, then offered up the 13cm one that I bought and is no where near fitting the mounting holes. Do I need custom rings?

Any help on some speakers known to fit would be appreciated. Also, any tips on where is the easiest way to run a live wire into the car to install an amp?

As a previous ICE installer

As a previous ICE installer (good few years ago mind!), I can assure you if you are wiling to give up half of your boot space. Then just leave the factory speakers... Spend money on a nice head unit with the features you want, and then amplified small 10" sub box which wil only cost £70-£100(such as those from VIBE or FLI are very good value). The boxes with built-in amps (known as active boxes) are best for most people and is a much easier neater instalation.

Avoid 12" subs for most music types.

The idea is too use the standard speakers for the treble/midrange/vocals which wil work fine at loud volume without distortion if you keep the bass away from them, so you set the Bass on the head unit fairly low on the head unit and the loudness function off. Then you adjust the gain / bass setting on the bass box to suit.

It is good idea if you wire up the bass box on a seperate on/off switch. You can adjust the head unit to suit the standard speakers to go nice and loud before distortion. Then once happy you turn on bass box and adjust that to match.

The result can be staggering for spending less than £200 total, And without any messing with dashboard/door speakers.

Generally you need to spend big money and lots of extra sound deadening to get impressive results from door speakers on their own.

My Cuore has got a £50 MP3 head unit from ALDI, standard front door speakers, And a £70 10" "Edge" amplified box in boot. And decent wiring direct from battery with a extra battery in boot. It is crisp, clear, damn loud and punchy if you want it to be!

Amazed a few local lads...One of which spent over £1500 on his peugeot 206 ICE.

The main problem with having

The main problem with having just door/dash speakers, Even good quality ones. Is they still cant put out the proper "umph" needed to sound good and bassy once on the move. Even with 4x50w head units as most are these days.

All too common this scenario...fit a new expensive powerful head unit, spend all day upgrading the door/dash speakers...

Then you sit on your driveway testing a few tunes, chuffed to bits that it sounds so much better. However, start the engine and then go for a drive. Engine, tyre and wind noise (especially with Daihatsu refinement) all drown out what you thought was a amazing sounding powerful system.

Thanks for the info guys. I

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will def get new speakers as I have cut the wires already. My mistake. I must admit in all the cars I have had I have never dreamed of keeping the stock speakers and doing it the way you said. I am happy to put a 10inch sub in the boot. I have had the 12" fli traps before and found them ok. Best I ever had was a twin 10inch JBL bass cannon. Got nicked tho when my 206 decided it was gonna start unlocking itself. I have a nice head unit. Alpine ida-x001 so got all the options for tweaking.

Alpine

Well I noticed a difference,
With stock mY alpine was distorting about 20 with the Alpine I can go full with a crisp sound, all I needed was bass , got a 5 inch under seat sub like this one

Does me well and I was used to a twin 15 inch 3000 watt system from my Lexus days , in the sswc in Cardiff on Sunday nights , the sound won't be good to show in a crux but loud enough in your car and if you like to feel the vibrations like I do stick it under the drivers seat, good luck With the install, buddy

Yeah I have seen some nice

Yeah I have seen some nice underseat ones. Does make a lot of sense. I am currently struggling to get a refund on the speakers that I sent back, but once thats sorted I will get onto sorting a subtle install Smile

What was the sswc? was it like swcc we had in swansea? Not my scene at all but my brother was involved and went to a few cruises with swcc

Swcc

Ye that's the one, I went to Swansea a few times, hard work keeping up with them , but nice to some of the effort put into systems, if you dont mind using boot space 10 inch vibe of fli but as I got 2 kids need the space for prams,

I've done a few a few Car

I've done a few a few Car audio installs and like Nathan says can get good sound for little money if you choose carefully and fit good.
My claim to sound fame is working in Dubai 1990's setting up sound systems for the likes of Bryan Adams and Niki Haris pop group Snap. I was only a novice with the wires but reckon i have a good ear for sound Smile

A few good tips to fitting door speakers -

Fit capacitors to them to keep out most bass and especially sub bass tones....helps stop the doors vibrating too.
Make or reuse the plastic canopy ring to shield from water falling on to it....the YRV originals have this and it can be cut to fit larger diameter speakers.
Use sealant between the speaker, spacer rings if any and the door frame or Bass will be lessened if not using capacitors.
Make sure they don't get in the way of any window mechanism and that the door card will fit over due to increasing width and height of the speaker..

i got alpines from halfrawds

the ones i fitted in the dash
Alpine SXE-1025S - 4" (10cm) Coaxial 2-Way Car Speakers
and the back doors
Alpine SXE-1325S - 5.25" (13cm) Coaxial 2-Way Car Speakers
i remember i made little extension for the wire as i dont like cutting oem wiring

have a look on this thread, its on there somewhere
http://www.daihatsu-drivers.co.uk/node/16106

ive done ice in all my cars , but best ive had is in the yrv, alpine budgets and a underseat sub works for me,
hope this helps

and

and my underseat sub runs off the headunit, the power plugs into the spare power on the iso lead its no 3000 watt 15 inch sub sound, but gives tha bunch tha the alpines dont give me ,

my lexus is200 i had had mutant setup and a panasonic tv unit, but cost over £1k my alpine cost £200 and it compares very well

Did those speakers screw

Did those speakers screw straight into the mounting holes? As the infinity 13cm that I bought for the back were miles off

I think so

Im not 100% but I can't remember making anything and I went with the alpine as they slim and fitted snug in the front, hard to fit with the windscreen fitted ,
The back door speakers were slightly to small but alpine didn't do the slim in a bigger speaker but I taped the gaps around the speaker, might have drilled new holes in the back but not Sure ,

Good luck buddy

Speaker rings

Hello All and Happy New Year!

I'm just doing a better Audio install in my Turbo and fitting larger diameter speakers in all 4 doors.
I work with a laser CAM cutter and made MDF custom spacer rings to allow 160mm for the 125mm door holes.
I'm willing to do some for any members for a reasonable price and would be alot less than the shops would charge i assume.
Various thicknesses 3,4,6,9,12mm and diameters up to 300mm.

I want some

Hi dave, I would definitely be interested in these. When would they be available and at what cost and I will be straight on it. Am I assuming they will then allow 17cm speakers?

Hi, have private messaged

Hi, have private messaged you.
Let me know what dimensions, inner , outer and thickness.
Have to buy the material (MDF) off work and can do when time and stock permits.

Hi dave, I had emailed you

Hi dave,

I had emailed you before I read this. I had thought you had already made rings for your car and was gonna use them as a template?

I've made several test rings

I've made several test rings and have tweaked them to fit my Blaupunkt speakers.
I'm putting 170mm 3 ways in the rear doors, 170mm midrange and 50mm tweeter components in the front, 6x9's in a custom made parcel shelf and might add my old 12" Bumper sub enclosure i had in my Charade GTti.
Each brand and model of speaker will have a slightly different basket design so the fitment hole size will vary. The fitment template in the box should say what size hole and i can cut a ring to match.
Cheers
Dave
