Airbag light on, caused by something that broke behind the steering wheel I think

Forum:

Not sure what is actually wrong, but here goes.
Had took off the steering rack to fit new tie rods and track rod ends. We re-fitted it and so far so good. Did a rough set up of the tracking and called it a day. When moving the car afterwards I went to turn left out of the drive, as I did there was a cracking noise from the steering column area and the steering felt tight. I decided to reverse back up the drive but when turning the wheel back to the right to straighten up the cracking thing happened again, and the airbag light came on.
On inspection there looks to be a circular thing in the steering column that looks like it's meant to turn with the steering wheel, but a part of it looks loose and is moving freely but gets pushed around by the steering wheel when it turns. It has a single black wire coming from it to the steering wheel, possibly the airbag itself, not sure. There's also a yellow wire but that doesn't seem affected by anything. The circular object behind the steering wheel in the column has a crack in it at the bottom, but it's difficult to see what's caused it and if it's that that's causing the airbag light to be on.
I know my description isn't great, but if anyone might have any idea what the problem could be I'd appreciate some advice.
Thanks. Siobhan.

Sounds like the clock spring

Sounds like the clock spring has been snapped unfortunately, this is essentially the wiring connection for the steering wheel airbag so the wheel can spin and not break the wires. When you disconnect the steering rack from the column its important to tie the steering wheel in place with a bungee cord or something and likewise make sure the rack is centered when re-installing as this spring only has a certain number of rotations before it over tensions and snaps. You will have to remove the steering wheel to fit a new one.

Thank you, I had a feeling

Thank you, I had a feeling something like that might have happened. Do you know if the part is readily available and roughly how much? I'm still skint. LOL

Would one from another car fit?

Would a clock spring from another Daihatsu fit my Cuore? From say a Charade (older one before the Sirion came out), the Sirion or perhaps YRV? I ask as there are examples of these cars at local breakers yards, but no Cuores. Not too keen on mail ordering used car parts, though if it comes to it I'll have to of course.

To SiobhanG and other members

To SiobhanG and other members too -

If you give me your chassis number i can run it through my parts CD and tell you what other models parts x-ref to etc.
Nothing dodgy me having it. . . they are on public display through the windscreen anyway.

Okay I'll look into it, might

Okay I'll look into it, might ask a Daihatsu dealer . There's a place selling the parts in Richmond, albeit at astranomical prices. If they say it'll fit then i can give you some money for it.
