Intermittent Fourtrak starter motor????

Forum:

My F78 Fourtrak has recently developed an issue where it refuses to start about 1/4 times I try the ignition. It's completely random, fine for a while then I turn the key and nothing but a click. Sometimes if i try it a few more times it'll suddenly work, sometimes no dice and I have to bump start it (it goes right away in this case).

Any ideas? I would have thought a starter motor would either be broken or working, not intermittent like this.

Could be the relay or the contacts on the solenoid are worn and arc pitted? The contacts are easy to do if you can play with tools etc and don't cost much if obtained from a specialist re-conditioners Wink

Its the starter brushes, had this numerous times and they are a doddle to change.

Go to your nearest independent auto electrician and ask him to order you a set, they will be less than £10.

Whip the starter off, clean thoroughly, remove the rear cover and you will see all four brushes in their plastic holder, if the brushes are low the springs won't have enough contact pressure to hold them tightly to the commutator; or they will be entering the plastic housing so the springs won't be touching them properly.

Slide the old ones out carefully and refit the new ones, clean the commutator, particularly inside the grooves, once they are all in you need a small screwdriver to ease them back up the housing as you carefully slide the plastic brush holder over the commutator. About 1 hours work if you've never done one before, 30 minutes if you have.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to whip the starter out in a bit and have a look. Will report back.
