Hijet as motorhome towcar

Forum:

Wonder if anyone has any info regarding using my little (1300) hijet as a towcar behind a motorhome - using A frame and anchor points to chassis Unknw and cable to brakes? loke the 'tow-a-car etc.
I want to put a kiyak on roofrack plus use as a runaround / store for seating etc.

Towing on A frames is a bit

Towing on A frames is a bit of a legal black hole unless it's for recovery use only.

DoT says one thing, full reading of the Construction and Use Reg's say another.

For example, it states that any wheels of a trailer with braking systems present must work - so you'd have to make all four wheels brake.

If you use an over-run coupling then reversing the towed car would be a problem.

On the recent Department of Transport publication, they state something like "we believe the towed car and A frame system become a trailer" - which contrasts with the policed policy of road going vehicle roughly defined as self drivable and in contact with the road.

The department of transport finish with something like - what we've published here is just our interpretation and not a legal document, and the decision is in the courts hands.

Towing A frame manufactures claim they are fully legal - yet they have no documentation to prove such claims.

Crap reply I realise, but after much research I just use a little car transporter trailer.

Towing and fuel gauge and Drivers window handle broke.

Thanks for youe reply..Yes towing is a minefield - the further you probe the murkier it gets. Europe are going to chuck a spanner in the works 2014 with their new rulings but it appears that many continental trailers are jack-knifing all over the place. My transit has a biggish rear overhang and connecting to the extension is not advised due to low nose weight available, so a towbar of any sort is not worth the bother (£550)or the money.
I have owned my 2001 hijet for around 4 years and the petrol gauge was bust since arrival - i did a bit of rocking in mud one time and all of a sudden it worked !!! few weeks later dissapeared again (i carry can of petrol after running out one time)! also i got a window raise kit from an irish breaker which worked okay for a while but now has konked out again. Also a rear spring bust and i eventualy found a replacement set only to find that they were for a fourtrack - fitted alright though - so now i trundle down the road with only the air in the tyres for suspension. Also a bit of trouble with the sliding door mechanism ! but the little van is so usefull i can put up with (and maybe repair) its quirks. i also locked myself out but drilled small hole in sliding door and flipped up the button with a bit of wire then taped over hole with white insulation tape !! all great fun.

Get yourself on the hijet forum mate!

This forum doesn't have many Hijet users on it.

So your saying you can fit fourtrack springs on a Hijet? That is very interesting as many people have pretty much failed to get new hijet springs on the forum.

You can pop the front locks on a hijet well easy, just pull the window seal off and look for the mech - quick pull with a coat hanger etc and your in.

Your fuel gauge may have stopped working because the ground wire on top of the fuel tank has corroded - or the other common cause is the float falls out of the float tube. There are a load of posts with pictures on the hijet forum.
