TOWING WITH A SPORTSTRACK

Forum:

Hi
Everybody I have a Sportstrack N reg I bougt it 2 years ago it haveing been in a minor bump, I repared the car myself it has been a good buy and has never let us down.
The question I have is will it tow a 2 berth caravan with out overloading the engine etc. I am aware the guide is 85% of the unladen weight of the car the caravan falls within this crteria.
I have however seen coments on other sites saying nothing under 1800cc as it will strugle going up hills.
Has the vechele comes a factory hook presumly it is ment to tow some thing If I had to change how doeis the four track compare .
Thanks .
John.

I would doubt you'd be aware

I would doubt you'd be aware it's on the back, given the gearing.
Nothing under 1600cc is purely opinion, and would apply to bog standard saloons, not heavier duty 4x4's

4x4's are alowed to pull up t

4x4's are alowed to pull up to 1 and a half times there own waight. I used to pull a heavy flat bed trailer with my trials F20 on it with a G reg carboretored 8 valve Sporti. She never let me down. She did feel the hills a bit, but then with that load on the back so did the 2.8 TD 4trak I had later on.

On one occasion she even tow started an F50 (2.5 deisel) across a field behind the loaded trailer, as I couldn't be bothered to unhook it.

I have often wondered about this towing question too. I tow a 7x4 trailer with anyhting up to 6 - 800 kilos of stationary engines long distances in Australia with my 1600 Feroza. I am thinking of getting a small camper trailer for retirement but was advised (by a caravan seller) its not only the engine capacity but the strain and wear on the gear box and dif which may not be capable of handling it. Wheres the truth ????

It's a Daihatsu. It'll handle it. Over enginearing comes as standard.
