YRV1298cc, K3 engine. Water in cylinders. Oil dip stick very short..

Forum:

Hello all I am new to this site, and my name is Eddie. I have just bought a 2002 YRV semi-auto, and it has a problem. When the spark plugs are removed there is water in the bores of no 2, 3, and 4. I will remove the cylinder head to examine, I am hoping it is just the head gasket, not a cracked head or block. I will post my progress. I wanted to ask if anyone else has had a similar problem, and what did they do to cure it? Also first car ever I have seen where the oil dip stick goes into the rocker cover and is only 150/170mm long. Is there another stick located on the engine? Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome! Sounds like you have

Welcome!

Sounds like you have the YRV F-Speed model? Basically an automatic with the optional steer shift change up and down buttons on he steering wheel.
As for the water in the spark plug holes, I hope up get to the crux of the problem and is repairable.
As for the oil dip stick, this is normally a plastic item but you also have another one for the automatic box to check the automatic fluid level which is metal. In relation to the automatic box, this is best checked and where possible get yourself an auto box fluid and filter change as with the YRV turbo, the auto box is normally neglected, and the fluid and filter should be changed every 6 years. Unfortunately with this neglect means that the auto box can fail. Flashing 'D' is a symptom as well as signs of issues with the gearbox itself. Unfortunately the auto box service isn't part of the YRV service schedule in the service book, yet it is mentioned in the owners manual near the back of the book.
Good luck.

Dip stick

Hello and thanks for your reply, the gearbox dipstick is fine, as is (would you believe) the oil on the stick. Not burnt or wrong in any way. So hoping that at least that will be OK. Yes it is a F-speed, cant wait to get it running and press those buttons on the steering wheel. I think Bob in a previous thread was on to the right idea, and that is someone previously snapped the oil dipstick, so the other bit is probably in the sump somewhere. Do you know how long the engine oil stick should be, so I know I have got all of it out when I take the sump off? Thanks for your help. Eddie

Oil looking good on the auto

Oil looking good on the auto box dipstick means nothing I'm afraid. It's the actual state of the oil inside of the auto box. Mine looked fine until I had it changed. On change out the oil colour in mine was black Sad and recently had it changed again after a year, and it was a black current colour. Should be a cherry red red colour.

automatic gearbox oil

Sure thing. I will change the gearbox oil once I get the engine sorted. Is there a filter in these boxes, that can be replaced easily enough?

Autobox filter

There is an auto box filter but it isn't easy to access as the subframe is in the way Sad the filter can be had easily enough from a Daihatsu Parts place for around £50. There are cheaper filters, but as there are no stickies evident on this forum which has this information to hand I cannot say where from.
