2004 Sirion 1.0 manual - slow loss of power, reverse gear sometimes "notchy" and irritating dashboard rattle and more!

Forum:

Hi all,

Firstly, awesome forum. I've got a 2004 Sirion that I've had since almost new (it had 200 k's on it when I bought it) that I've decided to do all the maintenance on myself - mainly because I don't think the mechanic who is working on it is actually doing much more than changing oils, etc, when servicing.

I'm hoping for some input/thoughts about:

1. Gradual (over a period of years) loss of power.
I've noticed that I need to drop down through the gears earlier than I used to. As it's been a slow decline, I'm not sure when it started, and, actually, I was thinking it was "just me" but it's become pronounced of late and now I'm sure I'm not imagining it.

I haven't done a compression test, but my thinking is that it might simply be a case of the car getting older, compression dropping, etc - except that from my understanding that would be indicated by smoky exhaust, and my exhaust isn't doing that.

2. Intermittent missing
I have had this issue for a while; it feels like it's idling roughly for a short period of time, fluttering and so forth, and that it might stall, but it doesn't. Just to make it more frustrating, it won't happen again for some time and then, when it does, the time interval between occurrences varyies; there appears to be no consistency to it.

I recently had the entire car actually shuddering, which was a first, and was on the cusp of returning home to grab another car to get to work when it cleared. In that case I thought it might have been caused by the higher-octane fuel I'd just put in as the local servo was out of the "ordinary" octane unleaded.

At the last service I spoke to my mechanic about the fluttering, rough idle, etc, and he advised he was following the Daihatsu service planned service regime, as per their recommendations, and that the spark plugs had been replaced in the previous service. Following the service, he told me that they found no evidence of rough idle. Obviously, that's all well and good, but the car is still doing it. Beee

3. Dash rattle.
This isn't a big issue, just an annoyance. Periodically there's a really irritating rattle from somewhere in the dash. It's been there from new, and was brought to the attention of the local service agent numerous times for sorting under warranty. They did nothing about it. Any pointers on where to start looking on getting this resolved? Is it a common issue? I'm almost at the point where I'd be happy to strip the dash out entirely to get it sorted.

4. Keys.
I broke one of my grey keys in 2 pieces when using it as a screwdriver (yes it was dumb, but I work on the railways here in Melbourne and it was either sacrifice my key or have trains delayed; I opted to have the trains run on time), and the 2nd grey is long lost.

I have the black (master) key, and can get transponder blanks from fleabay. I loathe paying locksmiths inordinate amounts of $ for "programming" keys, and I'm aware that many Toyota cars have the ability, with a bit of jiggery pokery, to add new keys to the car's "accept" list. I assume the same holds true for Daihatsu vehicles? Can anyone explain the process? In searching the forums here I've seen passing references to it being possible, so I'm hopeful that I won't have to offer up my firstborn as a blood sacrifice to the (bill)shocksmiths....

5. Reverse is, and always has been, tetchy to get in: is this normal?? I usually resolve the problem by rolling forward a fraction. It's not a hassle, but I dread the day I park hard up against something and can't roll forward to slip into reverse...

6. Workshop manual...
I would love to get the WS manual if it's available - I've looked through the "manuals" section of this site, but there doesn't appear to be a Sirion one there. Can someone please point me in the right direction ??

Many thanks!

Cheers,

G'Day! Sounds like a few

G'Day! Wink

Sounds like a few things. Will try and answer a couple of these for you.

- Hesitation etc.. You haven't mentioned the replacement of the air filter. Has this been done? If not worth a look. As for spark plugs are you using the correct specced ones for your engine? I take it as it's a 1.0 litre its the EJ-DE or EJ-VE engine you have? To check have a look on the engine for the stamped code. Also a lot of owners have found as of late that the O2/Lambda sensors on any of the Daihatsu range of engines require replacing around the 45-50K Miles mark, and it could be one of the lambda sensors failing (pre and after manifold (On exhaust if you have one)), but not so much that the ECU is picking this up. Talking of which your ECU/Engine Management light on the dash working/illuminating when you come to start the car and then going out once started?

- As for a Workshop Manual, there are some, and it's best contacting member BobF on here (Sticky opportunity Bob by starting a thread on a manual and making it a sticky Wink ). The manuals are broken up into engine types such as K3-VE (1.3 litre) and EJ-DE & EJ-VE (1.0- litre).

Good luck.

G'day Jpor, Thanks for your

G'day Jpor,

Thanks for your input Smile

I just had a quick look at the car: the engine is an "EJ-DE". I pulled the air filter and it looks almost new - the white element is still quite clean and, well, white and, checking the back of it (the engine side) there was almost no discolouration visible. I follow your logic, but I don't think it's a restricted airflow issue.

The ECU/engine light comes on when I move the ignition switch past "Accessories", but then as soon as I crank it goes off: I think it's always done this?

I have an OBD2 reader - I have actually tried it in the past but had no luck on the Sirion. At the time I assumed it was just a dodgy bluetooth OBD2 gizmo that I'd bought, but, thinking about it, we used it last week at work on a mates recent model Golf without issue. Hmm. It's a long time since I tried it though, so my recollection may well be off there.

Is there any test for the O2 sensors? Would it be worth disconnecting them one at a time and checking to see if the engine reacts? I've tried this on a Tata in the past - and a Subi, come to think of it - but never had any luck diagnosing a flaky sensor b/c when they're disconnected outright the ECU has always picked it up and reacted accordingly.

I'll PM BobF and ask for assistance with the manuals - thanks for the suggestion Smile

No worries

The only other things I can think of are the following:

- coil packs, you may have a failling coil pack starting to show
- ignition box needs stripping down and cleaning. This is a box that connects up to the coil packs. You need the manual off BobF to see where his is. They can suffer from corrosion.
- MAP sensor issue. Not sure of the EJ-DE engine but the K3 engines use a MAP sensor instead of a MAF normally found on other cars like Subaru.

As for spark plugs, which make have you? Normally wouldn't use anything but NGK or DENSO plugs as these are best suited for these engines. I am even using Subaru Impreza STi specced plugs in my YRV Turbo.

Hi Jon, Again, I appreciate

Hi Jon,

Again, I appreciate your input - I'll strip and clean the ignition box; Bob has been helpful with locating the manual so I'll check out the process and go from there.

I'll also have a dig around online to see if there's some easy and reliable way to check if coil packs are on the way out. Ditto for the MAP/MAF sensor.

It's funny - I also have a Nissan 300ZX TT that has all of these bits - sensors, etc - but for some reason I've had it in my mind that the Sirion didn't and taken some comfort from knowing it has a simpler engine and would therefore be easier to diagnose problem with and work on... LOL Smile
