Forum:
Hi all.
Recently changed my steel wheels for alloys.
All of the carrier stud heads are too big to use. They slot into the wheels but it is not possible to put a socket over them to tighten.
I screwed them in from the back so I could put alloy wheel nuts on them but the only one long enough is the one with the small padlock hole drilled in it.
I have tried to source M12 bolts 1.5 thread fine with 12.9 quality to screw through from the back of the carrier. Anything long enough i.e 90mm all have 54 mm of un-threaded shank from the underside of the head so again no use.
There must be bolts from the later Fourtraks for alloys and from my experience these type of bolts are relatively standard in thread and quality.
Anyone have any ideas.
Thanks,
ET
hmmm none of the above is
hmmm none of the above is what I call an issue, find a 21mm socket that does fit between the stud head and hole of rim, or just get a tap size to thread down the rest of the shank and cut bolts shorter.....nothing to difficult to worry about tbh.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Hmmm
Hmmm, that is the kind of put down you often find on Land Rover forums.
You have not understood the question. The nuts for alloys are 19 mm, a 21 will not fit!
You cannot cut a thread on a unthreaded shank on 12.9 quality tensile steel.
tbh any decent engineer or knowledgeable amateur does not write off reported problems with throw away lines.
on the wheel carrier you have
on the wheel carrier you have three studs, they have 21mm heads same size as the studs for wheels...unless you've got some different ones, which fit into both the steel and alloy rims, of course you can cut thread down the shank with the right tool, you just need an appropriate cutting agent/oil just to help, although you dont need that tensile strength at all, 8.8 or 10.9 will easily doo it, your wasting cash on bolts, I still dont see it as an issue as all your doing is fitting/making three studs to just hold a tyre, ive got some m12x1.5 bolts with full thread just sitting on my workbench along with others, you just need to go to the right shop...not B&Q but a decent tool outlet....or even try eBay, but the tensile and psi strength of bolts varies alot and are not always what they say on the tin as most are shipped from ching chong land and have varied metals and strengths in them, so its hardly worth paying megabucks for them in the first place unless you can guarantee there origin. Now if your able to screw the studs in through the tyre rim as normal, tighten with your fingers, then get a tape measure to go across the flat of one stud and the inner of the stud of the rim then try and find yourself a socket that fits....if you cant quite get one to fit but nearly does....stick it on a grinding stone and take of a mm or so....like I said...i cant see an issue with what your trying to doo...you should just try harder.
