Forum:

Hi Lads , i wonder if any of you guys can help with some advice, i have a daihatsu 2.8 diesel
that has started coughing and spluttering on starting , a fare bit of white smoke out of the exhaust , gear box shaking a bit , now she starts then maybe 10 seconds in she dies/stalls
start her again same thing but may not die ,after 30 seconds to a minute and half she runs like a goodun no smoke no coughing and spluttering good power and ticks over a treat , if i start her again in the same day within 4 hours or so i dont have the problem ?? so i thought it was maybe the plugs so
i have replaced the heater plugs a few days ago hoping this would sort it
just to give you all the info the engine is in a landrover 90 with the correct conversion plate
i have had the landy for a year and this is now getting worse to the point it is a problem
i seviced her 8 months ago ,new oil and fillter ,new oil ingear box and in transfer box
i have just put some oft that stuff in the diesel tank that cleans the fuel system lowers emissions and gives more engine power to see if that helps
any ideas wellcome
thanks for your time

Usual problems:

Usual problems:

Fuel filter non return valve ineffective and leaking, this allows fuel to run back to tank and it has to pump fuel to the engine to start, then clear all its air once started.

Corroded or perforated fuel lines, these allow fuel to run back to tank and also suck in air to the fuel.

Fuel tank pick up pipe, these corrode and perforate and as they pick up fuel they also suck in air, this air has to be bled before the injectors.

I assume you have checked the fuel filter. When you put fast acting cleaners in it clogs the fuel filter as it dislodges so much crap so quickly and clogs the filter, also have you drained the water from the water drain on the filter? if not then the engine will be sucking up part water which gives white smoke.

Glow plugs or glow plug relay, the relays can give problems and remember they are 7.2 volts and not 12 volt systems so check voltage and duration of voltage.

thanks ALLOT my friend for the info
i will start to check these areas out, the glow plugs are the ones i changed i did see 7.2v on them and the wire that comes of them goes straight to the dash on the landrover so not shure if there is a relay in there

If you have 12 volts going to

If you have 12 volts going to 7.2 volt plugs then theres your most likely answer.

Check for a relay and also check the glow plug rail voltage; if you have 12 volts at the rail then you need to fit a proper Daihatsu relay/timer assembly or swap your glow plugs for 12 volt ones which are available.
