Rust spots from stone chips?

Forum:

Hi everyone
I acquired my 2007 Sirion S in October and it was pretty much pristine apart from a couple of tiny stone chips on the bonnet, but when I washed my car yesterday I was surprised to find more than a dozen rusty spots on the bonnet. I've been driving for over 25 years and have never experienced anything like this before. How can I deal with the rust and how can I stop this happening again? I drive on motorways regularly. Thank you.

Depends on how big is the spot. a sandpaper might work good, most brands also offers a spot pen to clean out little marks. so try it also.

Aluminium roofing nail and a binder.

Sunflower oil works but is slow, boiled linseed is quicker, and superglue is so quick that you shouldn't use it with the nail (which it'll stick to) but should add it afterwards.

EDIT: For a few small spots, a ring-pull might be a more available alternative to the roofing nail (which they used to sell loose in B+Q) since it has a couple of pointy corners, though you wouldn't have the option of using it in a Dremmel that you have with the nail.

Clear nail varnish might be a quick-dry option for the binder, though I havn't tried it either. [EDIT: Have now. Works fine. ENDEDIT]

For bigger areas of course you can use crumpled aluminium foil as an abrasive/metallic treatment, and/or bits of beer can with a power-drill
