P1346 Timing chain, vvt and ocv.

Forum:

Hi All

I,m hoping that some good soul out there can help me with this problem. excuse me if i go in to some detail as i am a novice at these websites and feel that the more information i give the beter informed any of you will be to be able to help me.

About 4months ago my engine warning light went on, I took it into the dealership for them to rig it up to the computer. I was giving a fault code P1346 (vvt and and control valve) they quoted a large amount of money to take the engine apart just to find out what the problem is. I left feeling very disheartened and desided wait a while to take the car back in to have it fixed.

Finally i went in for them to find the fault they told me that the oil control valve, timing sprockets (including the VVT gear needed to be replaced? I did some extensive research on the K3 VE engine and discussed it with my brother (a qualified Daihatsu mechanic, who just happens to be on the other side of south africa at the moment!!!) I decided not to take the quote that they gave me and i just going to live with the engine light on!!

I am so disappointed in my car because I was hoping to keep it going forever!!!

I have three question:

My car has 175 000km on the odometer, Is it normal to have to replace the timing chain at this mileage?

I read a post that said the timing chain is supposed to last the lifetime of the engine does that mean my engine is also a dead duck??

has any one got any suggestions as to which parts could be replaced to solve the problem without have to take the entire engine apart (i.e. would just changing the ocv be sufficient to clear the code).

Thank you all so much in advance for your help.
