Terios ( whine sound )

Forum:

Hi and thanks in advance for any advice,
Recently I've noticed a whining noise in my terios which has not been there before - it is a low whine at present and can be noticed while driving with foot off the accelerator. My terios is 2007, petrol and 2wd version with 125k on the clock. I'm very worried that this could be a gearbox bearing but the sound is new and barely noticeable at the moment, so it is not completely certain as to it's source. I had a mechanic listen to it and he feels it could be a gearbox bearing but he is not 100% sure and advised to keep driving and check if the noise gets louder.

I would be grateful for any experiences or advice that anyone can offer, obviously I'm hoping it is not a gearbox bearing as that will be expensive to fix. I intend to change the manual transmission oil in the hope that this will help.

Many thanks,

Tommy in Ireland.

Gearbox whine

Sorry to be a bearer of bad tidings Tommy but I have had a problem with a 2008 Terios.
Started with a small whine but got much worse over time. I replaced the gearbox. Not much of a problem if a 2wd as you will be able to pick up a s/h one for about 200 euro. If you have a 4wd one it will be hard to get a complete s/h box and transfer box in Ireland as the 4wd model is quiet scarce. If you are handy the transfer box can fitted to a 2wd box but you have to transfer the o/p shaft from the 4wd main box which involves removing the casings.

gearbox whine

Hi Moss899,
Many thanks for replying with this advice. I'm looking for a 5 speed manual gearbox for the jeep and I will get this fitted as it appears to be a cheaper solution to having the box split and reconditioned. It is the 2wd transmission to the rear wheels so this might make it a bit easier to source the box over here. Can you confirm if the gear box from from the pre 2006 Terios, 1.3 version would fit the 2007 model or am I right in thinking that they had a four speed box? I had two of them myself in a past-life but cannot remember. I wanted to know because these are two a penny in breakers yards and I'd pick up one relatively cheaply. Once again thanks for you time and replies.

Regards, Tommy.

whining automatic transmission

Hi,

I know it's been a long time, but have you managed to figure out the problem? did you need to change the gearbox bearing finally?

I have a 2008 Terios, 4x4, bought it second hand in mint condition with 90.000 km on it. Everything was perfect until recently, when I hit 105.000 and decided to have a little maintanance done, including flushing the automatic transmission fluid.

After another 5.000 km, I started hearing a whining noise, that I wasn't sure where it was coming from. It was mostly noticeable in Drive mode when I stopped at the lights, with the brake/cluth pedal pressed. At first it was just every now and then, but now I can hear it every time I stop at the lights (can't hear it while accelerating).

I thought the fluid level might be too low or something, as I haven't double checked it since the mechanic did the flush. Yesterday, after cheking the level, I noticed that it was way above the "hot" mark. I used a syringe/pump thingy to pull out any excess, and it turned out that it had like 0,6 L over.
I'm afraid that driving more than 5000 km with 0,6 L excess, might have messed up something permanently... any thoughts?
The whining noise is still there...

I appreciate your help!
