LPG conversion for 2.8 TDX Independent

Forum:

Have relatively recently acquired a 96 model and love it! Have had all the little niggles put right and the wheels brought up to scratch, so there's just one more little job I'm thinking of carrying out - a conversion to LPG. The vehicle is my daily transport for the 12 miles each way to work and at weekends is used to pull a pretty heavy trailer (it was pulling the backside out of my Mitsi Space Runner) and for an occasional dash to the seaside (from Warwickshire)- annual mileage 14k ish. Does anyone out there in Daihatsuland have first hand experience of the success (or otherwise) of an LPG conversion? Where's the best place for the tank(s)? An relevent hints, tips, tricks even negative comments (like don't bother) are all welcome. Cheers, Baz

Errr .... LPG conversion for a DIESEL ? ? ? ?

First time I've heard of anyone trying to do that.

Even if it's possible, the expense will be huge. You will need to chuck out the injection pump and replace it with a distributor and spark plugs.

Might be cheaper to chuck out a perfectly good engine, fit something like a Ford 3 litre V6 with an LPG conversion.

Actually, the cheapest way to do things is to leave well alone.

Yes, we know that LPG is cheap (for how long ?), but do you see the thieving git of a Chancellor letting people drive their socially irresponsible motor cars cheaply without contributing to the social security bills for politically correct illegal immigrants? .... two of whom, with rampant BO, are sat next to me in the library as I write this!

NO NO NO

Ive got same vehicle as you and i recently looked into lpg conversion well actually its called lpg fumigation `cos what you do is inject lpg at around 10-15% mix straight into the intake with the diesel so it expands and burns better and gives around 30% more power and better mpg `cos you havnt got to floor the throttle as much for same performance. the kits cost around £1200 to have fitted but i didnt go ahead as i didnt have the money and also i wasnt sure how it affects insurance - i`ve lost my link but try going into google and putting in diesel lpg fumigation and see what comes up (i found about 8 firms doing it in uk and costs were very variable)

W V O + L P G

I'm running my Fourtrak on wvo at the moment, mixing it 50/50 with diesel. When the weather warms up I will be able to use less diesel in the mix. I'm paying 75ppl for wvo and that includes all taxes. It is possible to run on 100% wvo but it needs a conversion kit for that. I have also been considering lpg fumigation with the wvo. The www.lpg-kits.com setup looks good, simple and cheap to install. The advantage of running both together would mean 40+ mpg and no pollutants.

A good site for finding your local W V O supplier is
www.bio-power.co.uk
They have producers all over the UK.

veg oil

It can be done with no conversion at the oil is mixed with a turpintine like substance at 99 to 1 ratio and it is covered by tax as you have to pay 29p to every litre you use to the goverment

Anymore info on this way of d

Anymore info on this way of doing things m8 Unknw

What is... and where do you get this 'mixed' oil Unknw

oil

you mix it your self it was on tv with the guy of top gear they tested it in a volvo to prove it no loss of power. will try and find the name of the spirit you mix with it

Rather than LPG conversion fo

Rather than LPG conversion for a diesel engine (which dont make a whole lot of sense) how about adapting it to run on vegetable oil, after all Dr Rudolph diesel designed his engine to run on vegetable oil in the first place.

There are a number of companies that could adapt your 4track to run on pure veggy oil...its increadibley cheap and as a bonus the exhaust fumes smell like your local chippy...yummmy Smile

Seriously this is a very legitimate adaptation for all diesel engined cars.

vegetable oil

i know someone who successfully ran a 4Trak for years on 50% vegeoil/diesel mix - apparently it made the thing less clattery and a bit more power. only trouble was the vegeoil went up in price so as to make it unfeasible - i can find out more detail if you want(he`s got rid of the thing now) - i think you can register to pay the tax due - because its renewable fuel its half duty or something

oh i forgot to say

apparently the 4trak is ideal for conversion as theres no electronic management or anything silly like that to complicate things - and its the straight turbo configuration which produces the best results

LPG conversion?

Its easy and cheap depending where you doing it! One TIP is never do it in the UK! Its rip off! The bargain is held in East Europe! My dad converted a Honda Accord and an old Volvo 360GLE! The conversion was with LOVATO (the Mercedes of LPG conversions). The price to convert the Honda was £130 and for the Volvo because it was Injection (injections are a bit more money) cost £150. With LOVATO you don't lose power when you get it converted (whereas other makes you do loose power). I had quote for my YRV to be converted to LPG, £180 but didn't do it because the boot is small and I won't be able to use it which I often need to! If its too far try the Netherlands and Italy are the cheapest Western European countries for LPG.

Whats the point?

The point of converting is that one litter of LPG cost around 36 pence and diesel 84 pence!!!

wots the point?

yes but you use twice as much lpg than diesel and they mite be putting lpg up to the same price as diesel thats wot i ment when i sed wots the point
