Cuore (Mira) L251 Replace Speakers - SOLVED

Forum:

***UPDATE 2 - SOLVED***

Problem solved - I will quickly outline below how I arranged things, in case anyone in future will have a similar problem and need a reference...

1) the first thing to say is that my doubt about screw holes (see below) turned out to be irrelevant - speaker holes in the Cuore doors fit to a 160mm diameter speaker, and those speakers seem to have by standard a lot of screw holes pre-cut in their external ring. You just rotate the speaker until you find a combination of holes that fit with those on the door and you're set.

1b) as we're in topic, I must underline that the original speakers are very cheaply made (no surprise - the Mira is a budget car after all, didn't expect top-level speakers) and that the actual speaker is around 100 mm diameter - the rest of the diameter is a steel sheet frame. So, as I said above, go straight for a 160 mm speaker - which is a very common size, you'll find a wide range of products and a wide range of prices.

2) after some evaluation I picked up a pair of Alpine 1725S speakers (€ 32 on Amazon Italy). As I said above, there was a lot of choice in this price range (I found for example a pair of JVC speakers at around 25 €). I won't pretend I'm an expert in car audio who picked that specific set for some specific technical reasons, they just had good reviews, seemed well-made as far as I could judge, were from a prestigious brand and were reasonably priced. I found similar sized speakers for as low as 10 € the pair, and as high as 100 € and above. I don't actually think that the specific set of speakers will make that much a difference, so just pick those you like.

3) for the connections, I had already noticed that the wires in the doors had the terminals assembled in a white plastic connector. Now, for sure I could have just cut the connector away, stripped the wires and connect them to the speakers - but I don't like to cut existing cables if I can avoid it, especially if they don't have that much slack. Also, I'm not that good with a solder iron. So I searched and quickly found these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phonocar-Daihatsu-Suzuki-Subaru-Multi-Coloured/dp/B00AK93X0A

these adapters fit perfectly with the Daihatsu connector and the speakers terminals. They cost a little (in Italy I could find them at around 6 €, on Amazon UK they cost some more but maybe you can find them for less...), but with them connecting the speakers becomes as easy as putting together a Lego set.

4) with all materials on hand, the work was quick and easy. In less than half an hour I had the new speakers installed and tested and was reassembling the door trims. Sound is, of course, much better than with the original set - with the source (a cheap mechaless car stereo, if you're wondering) volume at 25% you have very satisfying effects. In hindsight, after seeing how easy it was, I could even have gone with a more complex set with separated tweeters and crossover (I saw them on amazon at around € 50), placing the tweeters on the plastic cover in the front corner of the door...although it would probably be overkill.

And...well, that's all.

***UPDATE 1***

Ok, turns out that removing the door trim was not that much of an issue - remove two screws, remove plastic cover at window lower front corner, gently pull the trim to unsnap the plastic bolts, unconnect the power window switch, put trim aside - reverse to reinstall it.

Had a look to the speaker, tested connection - seems correct. Seems the speaker itself died, gotta find a replacement. Oh, well, I had in mind to upgrade the speakers anyway. So I guess the new question is:

- Has anyone tried replacing the original speakers on a L251? What speakers are compatible with it? I noticed that the original speakers are bolted in place with 3 screws, seems to me that most speakers on the market have 4 holes for mounting - is that an issue?

Thanks to everyone for any information you may provide.

***ORIGINAL POST***
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm searching for support for a problem I'm having.

I recently got a '05 Mira (platform L251), known as Cuore in my country, for my wife (we had had a similar one a few years ago, but we foolishly sold it some time later...), the car mechanically is fine as we are used to with Daihatsu, however I noticed that the speaker in the left door is not working at all. Now, it is possible that the wiring on the ISO connectors of the radio has been done badly, however I'd like to have a look at the speaker itself (also because I'm thinking about replacing them with something better...).

I've been trying to figure how to remove the internal panel from the door, but I'm afraid to break something. I've also been looking for the workshop manual to see if there is any helpful information, but I'm not sure where to look.

So, my questions are:

1) does anyone know how to remove the internal panel from the door?

2) does anyone know where can I find the service manual for the L251 Mira?

Thanks to everyone for any support you may provide.
