Forum:
I have a 1990 f 75 Diahatsu Fourtrak 2.8 turbo recently it has started to die out, it seems as though it was starving of diesel the engine will struggle and then stop but right away you can start it again and it could go for maybe 5 – 6 miles and do the same thing again, or just do it right away. I have checked the diesel and air filters and replaced the fuel line from the diesel tank to the fuel filter and also to the pump, also checked that there is no water in filter. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How was the fuel filter when it was replaced? Any loose flaky stuff in it? Its possible that there is loose rust or gunk in the fuel tank, and that this is blocking partially or fully, the inlet in the tank. Also, have you completely bled the fuel system after replacing the filter/line. This can be a bugger to get right. Try undoing the fuel line into number 1 injector, while the motor is running. Retighten when no more bubbles appear. Do you use any fuel treatment?

The fuel filter seemed ok there was no sign of flaky stuff and the diesel looked clear enough. I also had bled the system as you had suggested and no I do not use any fuel treatment. Would you suggest that I drain the fuel tank?
If there wasnt anything flaky
If there wasnt anything flaky in the filter, then probably not necessary. But, it might not hurt. Its possible it could be diesel algea, hence the question re fuel treatment. Did you check the fuel return line back to the tank? Also check the hoses from the tank up to the vent behind the metal filler guard under the right rear mudguard. One of these might be blocked, especially the one that clips into the hole in the chassis, cuasing a vacume in the tank. I suppose really, its just keep looking to try and find the problem.

i would try the vent as well, although as a simple test, get one of those replacement emergency caps and drill a small 3mm hole through it to vent the tank, take it for a drive and if all well you know where the problem is. this can save you loads of hasske grovelling about.
had the same problem a few years ago and it was crud in the tank, but it showed in the filter.

Just take it for a drive with about 1/2 tank, and the fuel cap off the filler.

I know this is a compleat bod
I know this is a compleat bodge, but bere with me. A freind of mine had a simmilar problem. He tried all the usual things (as Bundy has sugested), as well as a few other les likely candidates. Eventually he thought about the fuel pump itself (ooh er, very expensive). To see if it might help he fitted an electric pump into the fuel line befor the engines own pump. The problem went away. He never did find what the actual problem was, but had about 18 monthes worth of troble free on/off roading befor he sold it on. I still see the car running around now (4 years later). Don't know if the new owners have sorted the problem, but I think it quite likely that the bodge is still doing the business.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks everyone for all your help and solutions, I tried removing the diesel cap and it worked a treat, so I now have a replacement cap with a hole drilled in it and everything is going great

Ok, so its a vacuum issue, which means that the breather is blocked. Take the metal splash guard from under the right hand mud guard off(10mm spanner needed) Look for the hose that plugs into a white plastic fitting that should be clipped into a hole in the side of the chassis. This is the atmospheric breather hose. Either pull the hose off the fitting, or pull the fitting from the chassis, and clear both fitting and hose with a piece of wire.
