Fractured dipstick guide pipe

Forum:

I have had my 1997 Sportrack from new and have just experienced my first major problem problem. Through most of it's life I have been plagued with a rattling/buzzing noise that seemed to come from the front exhaust. This morning when I removed the dipstick to check the oil level part of the guide pipe came away. It has fractured about halfway along it's length and I can now see evidence that it has been vibrating against the exhaust manifold. I suspect this has been the cause of the rattle all along. Has anyone experience of changing the guide pipe? On a purely visible inspection it is difficult to see how it attaches to the engine block. Am I looking at an expensive job to replace a relatively simple part?

These are usually just presse

These are usually just pressed or pushed into a hole in the block. You should be able to grab the remains of the tube with locking pliers or similar, and twist it up and out. The replacement should virtually just push in, maybe a tap with a block of wood to seat it.
