Carburrettors

Forum:

Hi guys,
Have just bought an 89 "F" Sportrak EL and there is a problem with the carburettor. Apparently the autochoke is a "waxstat" and it doesn't work! a previous owner has ingeniously converted to manual choke with a cable that he routed through the air filter and connected to the choke arm with an electrical block connector (and I thought I could bodge!!) the previous owner to me has tried to rectify this by re routing the cable and modifying the end connection, but there is still obviously a problem with cold starting.
I have been to a dealer who quoted me £373 + vat for a complete carb or £200 + vat for the "air horn" which contains the autochoke. How foolish of me this is where the term "autochoke" is derived from!
Does anyone know where I can source a cheaper alternative, or tell me how to botch it properly!!

Early autochokes were always

Early autochokes were always hit-or-miss affairs, as any Sierra/Maestro owner will tell you. There are (Or were) generic kits avaliable with a long cable you cut to suit, and clips, etc. You could try just getting a long cable and modding it yourself, or even better, look in the scrappie for something which may have been retrofitted.
