Metallic Clunk from Steering

Forum:

I have a 1990 Sportrak EFI catalyst. Problem started About 3 months ago when if on full steering lock going forward there was a very loud metallic clunk. This has become worse and now makes the noise even when only on about 3/4 lock. Almost sounds like the torsion bar is stuck and then suddenly releases. Also have noticed that the steering column now makes a slight click when the steering wheel is rocked and there is some play if the wheel is pulled/pushed. Due to lack of a servcie manual I do not know if this car has kingpins etc. that need lubricating.

mine does a similar thing

mmm mine, on full lock if you bump up or down a kurb makes a huge squeaky clang type noise
mine sounds like a torsion bar type noise and am wondering if that can be lubed and how.

regarding your quesy they dont have kingpins as such but have a trunion type ball joint affair now i noticed for the first time on tuesday while changing the pads that they do have grease nipples so i am planning a good greasy session on my back getting to all those hard to reach nipples.
i do suggest though if you get youself down on all fours and ask a friend to climb abourd and give your steering wheel a good jerking
from side to side at first with wheels pointing forward but fairly firmly
and then on and off each lock
look for free play in all the ball joints and trunion type things well every thing that moves really
if there is any it will be apparant
if you have a little then grease will take out the slack
but if you have a bit of a floppy one then replace it or it may pop out all together.
now regarding the king pins that arnt if you jack the sporty up leaving the wheel just off the groung you can put a lever under the tyre and gently lift the wheel up and down feel for a vertical clunk if there is then make sure your not feeling wheel bearing play
again if there is a little vertical clunk then grease should do the trick if its a big one then replace the ball joint.

now if this is all tickerty boo then it may be a torsionbar bush type prob but i am not sure how too test that
but i reckon if it is then it will be a right swine of a job.

hope this helps a little

Mine clangs with kerbs too

When I bump up or down a kerb and also drive through any fields or anything like that my Sportrak tends to make a few clang, clicky type noises which I have assumed it the suspension because as its always on the road that it not really get pushed as much as it could be so is a bit noisey when pushed at all.

My one mate keeps saying "oh sounds like the bottom of your cars hit the kerb" but I always have to point out it'd have to be a bloody big kerb Biggrin Might even be the leafsprings at the back clicking as they seem the sort of thing that'd probably clang and groan a little when they are actually used.

Grease those turnstops - they look like a smalll cup which a pin locates when on full lock.
