Engine Issues

Forum:

I have a 1990 H 2.8 TD.

I'm not too sure whats wrong. She is using water but not loads, over a week I can expect to use around 2/3 pints but there is not visable leaks.

I have notice that there is white smoke coming out when it running under load, someone said it could be steam but is the head is leaking I though it would eat the water. it seems to use lose water fast when I'm towing (underload) and driving faster (60/70mph would you believe).

Performance wise she feels the same, but I have noticed it is not longer giving me a good 300mile per tank, more like 220mph.

Are there an checks I can run? any suggestions,

cheers

Checking for water leaks

H,
The first and simplest check would be to check the dip stick & oil filler cap for sign of water contamination, this will appear as a milky white film.

A visual check of the engine block for signs of weeping or water staining, this is usually reddish brown colour but may be difficult to check on an oily engine.

Next check all hoses and hose clips and replace any that appear suspect.

Then check the radiator and heater matrix for leaks. If you suspect the heater matrix you may be able to bypass this TEMPORARILY with a length of hose to prove any suspicions.

Finally if all else fails run the engine until warm, remove the spark plugs and check the condition and colour of each plug, checking for signs of any cylinders that are not firing, look for any wetness or un-burnt fuel on the plugs. If any are suspect then a compression test and comparison of all cylinders is called required.

This is how I would proceed, I hope this helps.

PS. Sorry, I was forgetting its diesel and just going through the general process. Apologies for the error

It's a HGF (Head Gasket Failu

It's a HGF (Head Gasket Failure.) Probably blown a small hole between the water galleries and a cylinder.

lozing water.... how to test

take the spark plugs out, and turn the engine until one of the cilinders is in position of ignition. (both valves closed).
Then, using a compressor, put pressure in the cilinder, (I use a spark plug (only te metal part) on wich I welded a air niple from the compressor). You have to "lock" the engine so he can not turn, put him in 4 gear, and press the brake pedal. now, you can hear the air blown in the motor (open the oil full holl) (sorry for my bath english) if there is e leak between cilinder and water, yo see the water comming up in the radiator. I think you can do the same with a diesel, via the glow-plugs opening. Test each cilinder.I hope you can undestand my english. greetings from Belgium, Antwerp...

Cylinder head problem

Get a friend to rev the HOT engine whilst looking into the water reservoir/overflow - dont remove the radiator cap! If there are bubbles then its a cylinder head problem. Also oil in the water indicates a similar problem but could just be contamination.
When the engine is at 'hot' temperature, white smoke means water is leaking into the piston pots and escaping as water vapor with the exhaust gas. The car has a damaged head gasket with possibly a warped cylinder head [needs skimming] but could be a cracked cylinder head. Hope for the first or get a bank loan if the latter!

You could also get your cooli

You could also get your cooling system pressure tested. Turbo engines cover up blown head gaskets very well, so you most likely won't notice any power loss. Condensation out the exhaust when the engine is hot is a dead giveaway though.
