Transmission Swap

Forum:

Hi, I have a 88 Rocky (F75), has 4 spd 4 wd transmission (2H, 4H, N, and 4L). Recently I Swapped it with 5 speed trans, The trans comes with 4 wd selector has only 2H, N, and 4L. Also it comes with additional gearbox for winch.

I have some problems in activating the 4wd. Since there are some parts that the previous trans doesn't have. Those are a hose (other than breathing one), and 2 solenoids/switches (Denso brand) the one exactly the same as the air conditioner to raise the rpm.

Does anyone has a clue to solve this? about the switches wiring, and routing to for the other "hose". Diagrams would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

The later boxs use a dash swi

The later boxs use a dash switch to select 4wd. I belive the switch operates a vacum system to operat the transfer. Don't know any more as all the daihats I've had were the good old manual lever veriety.

If your old transfer case was

If your old transfer case was Ok, I would swap it onto the new gearbox. Solves all your problems. If you decide to keep the new transfer case fitted, you can remove the PTO drive by using parts from the old case.

I'm not sure you can do that.

I'm not sure you can do that. As fare as I'm aware there was no 4 speed F75 on the UK market. 4 speed stoped about a year befor the F20/50's stopped comming in. Can't say for other contries, or imports obviously.
Any way what I'm getting to is this. If I remember right, you can marry a transfer from a 5 speed box to a 4 speed box, but not the other way around. Something to do with the way the transfer bolts up to the rear of the gearbox. Sorry that's a bit vage, but this is remembered second hand advise from a conversation some time ago, with someone I know who tried all sorts of gearbox/trasfer/diff ratios to get his comp safri/hill rally car as low geared as possible.
I must say I can't think why there should be a problem as the 5 speed box is basicly a 4 speed with an overdrive sandwiched between the rear of the box and the front of the transfure. This overdrive is linked to the gearstick as a 5th gear, but is esentually a separat part from the 4 speed box. If you look at a 5 speed & a 4 speed next to each other you'll see where the 4 speed joins to the transfure, there is on the 5 speed another section of gearbox. This is the 5th gear. It is heald to the basic 4 speed box and the transfure by long bolts that go through the same holes as the normal size bolts go through on the to hold a normal 4 speed box to it's transfure.
Hope some of this verbale wondering might have helped.
