Hot gearbox?!? why?

Forum:

Hi there
I own Fourtrak F85 1984

Recently I noticed that my gear-shifting lever gets pretty warm. Then I checked the gearbox and I found it beeing very hot. Allmost like an engine!? I checked the oil level both in transmision and transfer and found it being normal!?
During the ride I do not have any problems!

Has anybody had a Hot gearbox??

Regards

Hot lever

The gear lever on my old Metro used to get hot when I drove on the motorway. When is it getting hot? Everytime or just when you do a certain speed?

Not sure what causes it tho. Just that my old car used to get nice and hot, which was good as its heater was crap Biggrin

hot gearbox

i also own a fourtrack a 1994 independant, this box gets hot on long runs but seems ok and drives without any problems. i,am interested to know if you find the box notchey in second gear when cold, and if there is any body out there who can explain if, or what the faults are or is it one of them things a fourtrack niggels with. thanks

Billycan, Rockys (Fourtraks)

Billycan, Rockys (Fourtraks) are well known for having notchy gearboxes when cold, perculilarly, 2nd gear. Mine is such, that if possible, I change from 1st to 3rd if conditions allow. When it is warm, no problems. Be careful though, as stuffing the 2nd gear synchro ring is a distinct possibility. That is a result of that notchy 2nd gear.

hotbox

Dont worry about the box getting hot...its nothing untoward..heat from the engine travels by conduction to the box..as long as oil levels are normal you should have nothing to worry about.
There is a well docuemented problem with notchy 2nd/3rd gears in the 4track..loads has been posted about it.If the problem becomes so serious to the point where you cannot engage 2nd gear at all when cold then the main shaft nut in the box has worked itself loose. This would necessitate dropping the gearbox and either tightning the nut or replacing it..not a job you want to do unless absolutley necessary.

Don't worry. Perfectlly norm

Don't worry. Perfectlly normal. Just make use, put a pasty on the transmition tunnel, it's a perfect way to have a hot meal when you reach the end of a long jurney. Don't lagh till you've tryed it.
