1980 daihatsu "Pre Fourtack"

Forum:

Hi,
greetings from Oman.
I have a 1980 daihatsu 4wheel drive. 1600cc petrol motor.
I thinks its an ancestor to the Fourtrack !!!!

Im currently re vamping the electrics, and need to know what should be the points gap. Ive been told 0.5mm, but I still "backfire".

Any ideas.

Just for info, the "beast " is used daily, and has had 5 owners and done almost 400 000 kms. Not bad for original engine.

Cheers.
Ray.

She is a fourtrak. And she's an F20. As for the backfire, have you timed her up? I know this is probably the first thing you did, but did you do it by the book (timming marks) or by ear? These engins are renowned for there crankines. You could try this:
1. loosen the distributer locking bolt (allowing it to rotate in it's socket.
2. start her up.
3. using plastic or rubber coated tools, move the distributer around until she runs the most even.
I have done this, and got F20's to run up to 45 degrees out from where the timing marks say it should run.
Also these old ladies do tend to develop carbereter problems, especialy if off roaded. A 1600 ford escourt Webber carb can be adapted to fit, and runes much smoother.

F 20

many thanks.
i see why you emphasized rubber coated tools......
after a few shocks, a pair of gardening gloves did the trick.
Thanks.
Runs much "sweeter" now.

Another problem, i now seem to have, and im not sure if its the related to the starter moter solenoid.
When turning the key in the ignition, i get a "click" from the starter motor area. next turn of the key its ok and fires up.

maybe just the bushes need cleaning, solenoid replacing ??
any ideas.

Cheers.
Ray.

(FYI here in Muscat Oman, we have 9 of these old F20's, all pre 1985.
All going strong. We have an annual rally called the Wahiba Challenge.
In short we "compete" against other makes, wrangler jeeps, toyotas etc.
a good excususe to get away for two night, practice dune navigation skills and have fun.
will post some shots soon.)

The click from the starter mo

The click from the starter motor area will be the starter solinoid working (throwing the starter sprocket into the flywheel teeth). However the starter it self is not spining up. This could be due to any number of problems. The fact it starts second time say's it's a small problem, probably. It could be:
1. Bad earth. Put a new earth lead direct from battery to starter body.
2. Bad positive conection. Take conection apart & clean it up.
3. Sticky starter. (Most likely I think). Take starter apart and get the mud out, or try putting another one on.
4. Warn brushes. Change them.

That's the most likely culprets, I think.
