Hi
MOT man told me to pinch up the front bearings as there was slightly excessive play in them. Mine is a 1990 Fourtrak 2.8t dlx or something like that, has the button press 4wd and autolocking hubs. Once I get the hub covers off (having bit of hassle with rounded allenkey bolts) I am told by MOT man again that there will be a nut for adjusting along with a lock nut. However he admitted that he hadnt actually done one. So basically has anybody done this. Its the autolocking mechanism that worries me, any pointer to this much appreciated, cheers
Get the entire hub assembly o
Get the entire hub assembly off. Inside, you should see a large nut. There should be a locking washer behind this, with tabs bent over nut flats, then another nut. Bend the lock washer straight, then undo first nut. Remove the washer, then adjust second nut. Flatten washer and reinstall, then install second nut. Bend tab of washer over again to lock nuts. Reinstall hubs.
Its a good time to check and regrease the outer bearing. If you want to check the inner bearing, you have to remove the brake caliper, then the whole hub should come off.
The good book says to use the appropriate special tool, (a large socket or pipe spanner) however, the common usage seems to be a hammer and punch/screwdriver/chisel for adjusting these. A pretty easy job.
Have fun
Cheers
David

What is the proper adjustment
What is the proper adjustment for the second (inner) nut?
Get it fairly tight, then back off 1/6th of a turn?
Or, tight enough to eliminate the wobble but loose enough to allow the wheel to spin freely?
I was once told by a mechanic
I was once told by a mechanic I worked with years ago, tighten them right up, then back off 1/4 turn, but make sure then them turn freely, without binding.

Could't have put it better me
Could't have put it better meself....had same problem with those rounded torx/allen bolts holding the hub cover on...eventually got em loose by use of strong flathead screwdiver and hammer on edge of bolt head..you only need to loosen them and they will turn easy.
If you can i would follw what the good boook says and get hold of the correct socket/tube spanner for the hub nuts...makes life a whole lot easier and you dont feck the nuts.
