top speed for a 1990 2.7 turbo diesel ?

Forum:

Hi all, what top speed should expect from my truck Unknw
took it out for a good run today and floored it ( just to see )
i got 73mph ...didnt keep it there long as it whined and grunted and sounded like a gale was blowing thru the doors ( do the door tops allways shake around like they dont fit ?)

sure wasnt "cruising" tho..wouldnt like to do it on the motorway for any length of time ! might blow the old beast up?

Is this all normal Unknw or should it be doing better?

It flies up hills tho !

top speed 1990 2.8TD

Mine will cruise at 70 and do 85/7mph when really booted but on the M.Way I try to keep at 70mph and just push the pedal bit when I need to get past someone.

I have increase the fuel slightly on my pump, no smoke, but it does make a diffence nearer the top end, however, this does result in using more fuel.

It does not wine or grunt at that speed, just the steering feels abit lose. On average though we bomb around about 50/60mph.

I can wring about 90mph (on the speedo) out of my 1991 TDX but it doesn't really like it! 80mph is no problem though, and cruising at 70mph is fairly relaxed, if a bit noisy compared to a car...

I get the flapping door top thing too, its pretty annoying on a windy day. Strangely I used to have a newer fourtrak, a 1993 Independent and it didn't do this. Scratch one-s head

wahey!

i have wind deflectors (mud gatherers) and my doors do not flap when i reach terminal velocity at (assuming speedo accuracy) 95mph

...i do neither condone, like, nor feel remotely safe doing this! (not on a public road of course) but fuel economy seriously suffers over 70.

goin to be tinkering with fuel/boost shortly so will see if jeffry can beat the ton mark! Wink

flapping doors

Hi there just to say my 1989 2.8td does about 75mph but it is quite noisy & I was going to ask a similar question about the doors, as the top of my driver door flaps like mad, you can see daylight throught it, but yet it doesnt leak at all.

The tops of the doors flap be

The tops of the doors flap becouse of negitive air presure. What happens is that as you drive at speed the air hits that less than streamlined windscrean, and goes the only way it can, out to the sides and over the roof. As it does this it couses a vortex (like a whirl wind only slower) to form around the front of the body (where the door tops are. This vortexing air is of a lowwer air presure than the air around it, and more importantly in your car. So the higher presured air in your car pushes the tops of the door out ward. You wouldn't get any wet come in, as any tying to would also get pushed outward.
You will also find that if you try to wind up an open window at speed, the same thing happens to it, and it doesn't fit back into the fram properly until you slow down. Unless you have the little black bits of plastic at the front of the window track (on the a pillar) to push the window back into place.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

top speed

I was thinking of adding some deflectors to mine, I see they are on Ebay quite oftern.

Doors

Hi, I cruise at 70mph, a little bit noisy but no problem. My 1990 2.8 TD will do 85+ if pushed but it doesn't like it. I used to have a problem with the doors as you described but this is what I did. I wound down the windows and bent the tops of the door frames in about an inch. It worked. I can do 80mph+ and they stay shut and I don't see any light through them.

Have had 1994 fourtrack for a week
I know what you mean about the poor fitting doors, although it is only the nearside one that causes me concern. How did you " Bend) the door in??
