My fourtrak diesel engine has a breather pipe comming out of the nearside of the block, down to just beside the sump. should'nt breathers be routed back into the intake, to reduce oil loss and fumes etc??

No, thats standard for the DL
No, thats standard for the DL2.8, well, at least the earlier ones. All the ones I have seen vent to the atmosphere.
