Taft drum brakes

Forum:

I have drum brakes all round and they're decently strong, but they make the vehicle pull to the left when braking hard, how exactly do I adjust them?

drum brakes

not a particularly difficult task mate, if there the same as every other drum brake then the procedure is as follows.

the easist way is to totally lift the car and support on axle stands, (leave the road wheels on)
on the back of the drum plate somewhere around the vacinity the brake line goes into the drum, you will see a square drive screw type thingy squirt all four of these with duck oil or some other type of decent penetrating oil, leave it for about 10 mins (nows a good time fot a cuppa. you'll need a brake adjuster spanner for the next step mate, only a couple of quid from any accesorie shop, now screw the stud in to the drum this wil force the shoes apart causeing the drum to eventually lock up,(by the way as your adjusting you will feel the stud go slack every 1/4 a turn or so this is normal) when thedrum is locked ascertain this by turning the roadwheel, you then need to slaken the stud until the wheel seems to rotate with to much resistance, not to much though as brakes will underperform, and thats it repeat for other wheels and boobs your uncle. personally i would have the drums off and clean all the shit out of them first and test drive to see if problem remains. hope all this helps, and that i haven't got sore fingers for nothing ha ha .... good luck DEAN

seized nuts

you could try heat but you'll need to disconnect brake lines and probably have to change the wheel cylinders, my advice is paitence, perciverance, and plenty of penetrating oil mate they will give eventually, but careful you don't snap em....

Alternative. There rare, but

Alternative. There rare, but if you can find a disk breaked (A reg) F20/50, undo the top and bottom swivel housing bolts, and change the whole hub/break/half shaft asembly over. Another way of acheiving the same result (if you weld well) is throw away all drum break crap, leaving just the hub. Get a pair of Suzuki SJ break disks, these fit over the wheel studs like many cars. Then find a scrap car with larg break calipers. Remove them, and gas off the mounts for them. Then weld the mounts in the right place on your axel to lin up with the suvuki discs. This is also a good way of getting all 4 wheels disked up.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
