'91 Rocky hissing when I step on the gas

Forum:

I have a '91 Rocky with the HD-E engine, and I've been fighting with an overheating problem. In the back of my mind I feel that this is fairly major, possibly a head gasket, but a new problem has come up. Now, when I push the throttle all the way down, and it has to be in gear it can't just be idling, I hear a very loud hissing, almost a screach when the engine is tach'ing around 4000rpm. It seems to be coming from the right-rear part of the car. I know this isn't the exhaust, it comes out the other side. I did just take out that plastic box behind the right rear inside panel to fix a crack in the vacuum check valve that's back there. Could this be coming from that, or could this be coming from the engine compartment and it just sounds like it's coming from behind me?? If anybody has any advice, I would very much appreciate it.

Turbo Whistle ?

Hi harralk, the noise that you're describing sounds like a turbo hose split or a hose clip loose/broken allowing pressurised air to escape when the turbo boost pressure rises. If you have a intercooler fitted it may also be escaping from the seems where the end tanks attach.

If you find a hose has burst open it may be worth having the turbo waste gate operation checked. The waste gate is a small flap on the exhaust side of the turbo which opens when the turbo boost reaches a certain pressure. With the flap open the turbo stops working letting the boost pressure fall until the flap closes again. If the flap isn't opening the presure keeps increasing until something blows ( usually a hose).

Hope this helps

Perhaps, but I would guess Ha

Perhaps, but I would guess Harralk is in the USA, driving a US Rocky/Sportrak/Feroza, given the fact its a HD-E motor, which is unlikely to be turboed or intercooled.
Apart from that, I cant guess what it may be, except for a cracked manifold, but this has already been discounted. However, do you have a fuel smell inside the cabin, towards the rear. There is a expansion chamber somewhere in the rear, behind the side panelling, that is known to develop a crack in it, allowing fuel vapours into the cabin. Perhaps this has happened, or a breather hose has fallen off.

HISSING at 4000rpm

I am a lazy guy, accustomed to finding that various terrifying noises turn out to have simple, non- sinister causes.

My suggestion: think about the air intake system. Is the air cleaner properly installed, is it overdue for renewal, is the air intake plumbing entirely correct. Could there be a foreign object in thar, such as a plastic bag? A tiny bird, snake or frog??

that's correct, David. The e

that's correct, David. The engine is gasoline, and no turbo. And, yes I do live in the US. This is the best site I could find for Daihatsu owners since they haven't sold them in America for 9 years. Anyways, I just repaired the check valve on the expansion chamber in the back, and I haven't totally thrown out the possibility of a cracked manifold. The noise just seems to be coming from behind me, but I know how these strange noises in cars can be sometimes. The problem is finding the bugger. It only makes noise when I'm accelerating, or going up a hill not when it's just sitting in neutral. Well, I already have to check for a cracked head, I guess a little more investigating for this won't make much difference. Thanks guys.

The cracked exhaust manifold,

The cracked exhaust manifold, apparently, is under a heat shield. It makes a whistling noise under acceleration. Some of the Feroza guys should be able to give more assistance, or do a search for feroza cracked manifold, or similar. Good luck finding it. I know a couple of guys in the US have imported headers/extractors from Oz to fix the problem. Unfortunately, its not a cheap way to fix the problem.
Actually, I am on a different site to where that info will be. Go to www.outerlimits4x4.com and search the daihatsu section for the above info. Its an aussie site, and you are referencing Ferozas on that site.

OK, so nevermind about this p

OK, so nevermind about this problem. Although I do appreciate all the help you guys have been giving. The noise is coming from the new K&N intake I put on a couple months ago. I didn't notice it before because it wasn't as cold then and the air is thicker now that it's getting below freezing here. It warmed up a little today and it wasn't doing it, and tonight coming home from work I could clearly here it coming from the new air filter. Sorry for the panic, I've just been cautious lately since I'm chasing another problem and I didn't know if they were related. But I'm going to go ahead and check the manifold anyways since I read that they are prone to cracking on these cars.

Thanks again guys.
