Forum:
I have a 1980 f50, today the mechanic tells me that the rear diff has moved due to part of the axle being rotten around the spring hangers. Can anyone tell me how to get over this problem please, he claims I need a new axle because the axle has brackets built onto (to keep it level pegging so to speak).Does anyone know if this axle is repairable or do I need a new one? Thanks for any advice
Re: F50 axle
The axle tube itself is about 1/4" thick so very unlikely to be corroded seriously. However the spring perch (which is welded to the axle tube) is much thinner and open at one end only which allows mud in but not out. It is probably this which has rusted to the point where the weight of the vehicle has crushed it. The solution is to remove the axle, cut off the remains of the old perches, fabricate a pair of new ones and weld them on. You could buy new perches to suit the diameter of the axle tube or make your own like I did.

spring perches
you can make new purches from box section, the axles are cast but can still be welded
f50 problem perches
can anyone please help me with the diameter of the axle as I intend to purchase some spring perches or have my friend make me some at work as it is not possible for me to engineer them

Asumming you don't have calip
Asumming you don't have calippers, you could put a spirit level on each side of the case, and messur the disstance between them, once they are both perfectly vertical. May need extra hands...
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
