i think the transfer box is bust

Forum:

hi all
my lad has just bought a 2.8 td h reg fourtrak, paid for it drove of about 200 yds, loads of crunching and grinding, then lost all power, i think the transfer box has calapsed. engine runs, still need to depress clutch to select gears but just wont move. prop shafts dont rotate front or back. anyone have a clue please.this motor has not moved fora good few months and the previous owner said the rear axle was whining.

test

Personally I would do the following......

Disconnest both the prop shafts from the transfer box (you can leave them attached to the axles for now.

Now see if you can turn the transfer box? if not it imediatly indicates that the transfer box of gear box is up set.

If you can, try starting the motor, put her in to gear etc....the transfer box plates should move...if they do then it is an axle problem.

determine which is wrong first.......

Try the simple things first.

Try the simple things first. Has the transfer case dropped into N. Check the lever.
Then try driving in 4H or 4L with hubs in. Any movement of the vehicle? Then go for the disconnect prop shaft routine.

Hi markbivvy,
If you read my posts under Gearbox/Transfer Box it sounds familiar.
I feel for you because at least my boy went 30 miles not 200yds.
If you need any more help to locate parts drop me a line I can save you hours after I've done the same.
