DIFF PROBLEMS

Forum:

HI CAN ANYBODY HELP WITH THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM.
I HAVE A 94 FOURTRAK IND TDS WITH 138K.
IT IS USED FOR TOWING A HORSE TRAILER ALWAYS DONE ON ROADS IN 2WD.
MY TDS HAS 2H,4H,N,4L RATIOS WITH AUTO HUBS.
WHILST TOWING LAST WEEKEND IT WAS DRIVEN 60 MILES IN 2WD AND JUST BEFORE A STEEP HILL IT WAS STOPPED AND 4WD SELECTED. IT THEN FELT LIKE IT WAS HOLDING BACK WITH NO URGE TO MOVE OFF WITH ANY SPEED. THE HILL GOT STEEPER AND AS IT TURNED A SHARP BEND IT ALL WENT WRONG! THE STEERING STARTED TO JUDDER/FEEL RUBBERY AND IT WOULD NOT GO FORWARD, IT FELT LIKE IT WAS NOT DRIVING THE WHEELS.
I HAVE READ ON THIS FORUM THAT IF YOU DO NOT USE YOUR 4WD 4H MODE, THAT THE DIFFS MIGHT SEIZE. I SUSPECT THAT THIS MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM, AS IT WAS ONLY USED IN 4H FOR A FEW MILES LAST WINTER. ALSO THE DIFF WAS NOT WARMED UP AND MAY HAVE LACKED LUBRICATION? THE CLUTCH IS GOOD AND IT WAS DRIVEN BACK 60 MILES IN 2WD AS NORMAL.

THE CAR IS FINE IN 2WD BUT STILL DOES THE SAME ON THE FLAT WITH NO TRAILER IN 4H. THE PROBLEM SEEMS MUCH WORSE WHEN FULL LEFT OR RIGHT LOCK IS USED IN 4WD.

ANY SUGGESTIONS HAS ANYONE COME ACROSS THIS BEFORE.

MANY THANKS.
DAVE.

Yup I agree with Gar...trans

Yup I agree with Gar...trans wind up

Serious damage can result in running in 4WD on hard surfaces...there was really no need to select 4WD to take you up a steep hill...4WD should only be used when the conditions require additional traction e.g. ice, mud, sand, deep snow.

It is possible to 'unwind' the transmission...select 4WD drive and reverse the vehicle in a straight line for about a quarter of a mile...hopefully that should do it...

Read this article on transmission of a 4WD vehicle.

DIFF PROB

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. I DID RING MY LOCAL DIAHATSU DEALER TO ASK ABOUT RUNNING IN 4H ON THE ROAD. THEY SAID IT WOULD BE OK! I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT THEY HAVE ONLY JUST BECOME A DIAHATSU DEALER SO MAY NOT HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE BASE. I TAKE IT THAT NEW CV JOINTS ARE REQUIRED?
THANKS.

Diff Prob

Your CV joints should be o.k. It's just the link I posted to explain transmission windup talked about knackered CV joints as well.
Sorry for the confusion!

Diff Problem ???

excessive indifference in front and rear tyre wear will cause this also non matching tyre size too!......{wheel speeds change greatly on cornering} so this will hilight your problem.
