Exhaust

Forum:

Hello.

Does anyone know what the law is on exhausts?

I always thought that exhausts had to be under a certain number of decibels.

I heard from a friend of my Dads that basically if an exhaust has got baffles and silencer then it is correct but if you have a set of straight through pipes (No baffles) then there is not regulation.

Also can anyone tell me how strong galvanised steel pipe is under exhaust heat? I cant see it will be weak, but I dont know what galvanising does to the strength of steel.

The reason I am asking is because I one a 1993 Suzuki GN250 motorbike and I am slowly restoring it, but a new version of the exhaust fitted, which is a 2 to 1 exhaust, is £300!

I can get a 2 into 2 version for about £120 which is more afordable, but still expensive when on a tight budget.

I have access to a pipe bender however and I can fabricate and exhaust out of steel pipe. I am unsure though of whether to go for galvanised steel pipe, mild steel pipe, or stainless steel pipe.
I do know that stainless steel will be most expensive but if its not to expensive then its fine.

Thanks!

Hi. If you try to manipulate galvanised tube through a bender the galv will crack off, far better to bend plain mild steel tube ,then get it galvenised, but the cost of galvanising would not be economic. Much better to use stainless, and you can weld it with the appropiate rods/wire.

I am not worried if the galvanizing comes off.......if it does it means it is just mild steel (just thicker walled).

The main problem I have is I am unsure of whether it can take the heat of being an exhaust.....

How much is stainless steel per metre?
and
how much is galvanized steel per metre?

Thanks
