Sportrak pulling to the left when braking

Forum:

Hi everybody,

Ive got a '95 model sportrak and when i brake it pulls to the left... the heavier i brake the more it does it, and it seems to do it more when going down hill.

Also, the wheels seem to lock up very easily when braking in the wet... could this be linked?? (Goodyear Wrangler 195 R15 tyres)

Thanks in advance for your help,
Nat

pulling sportrak

hi nat, cant say exactly , but you may have a seized caliper on right hand wheel, this would cause the car to pull to the left,(as this is the only caliper working), best bet is to take it to a garage that does mot's or a tyre dealer and get it checked .... the caliper can be stripped down and free'd or a new one will cost about £120. second hand spares are like rocking horse manure to locate. hope this helps. good luck

i dont want to get old ..... just yet

First, look at the tyre press

First, look at the tyre pressures. Then check the brake pads. Look around the R/H caliper and brake lines for leaks.
You may find yourself also having to bleed the brakes to finally cure it.

Pulling power!

Also check the rear brake r/h side. Loss of breaking on right side will pull vehicle to the left.
If you bleed the brakes remember the sequence from the servo, must be to start from the shortest pipe, finishing with the longest pipe. You might find the break nipples rusted solid. Use 'penetrating oil' 24 hours before you start work. Could be worth replacing the nipples .. they are standard size available from most motor-factors - avoid the daihatsu dealer.

Sorted!!

Thanks for the advice. As ive never really done any mechanics on cars before i decided it best not to mess with the brake system, and also its got a warranty on it still (only a couple of weeks old!), so i took it too a garage and it was a sticking caliper on the r/h side, so they greased it up and it seems to be better now!

Still seems to pull slightly, but only if theres a camber on the road, so i asume thats just to be expected from driving a 4x4!! (a bit differnet from the Corsa i used to drive!)

Thanks again,
Nat

PS - I've put a picture of me in my Sportrak in the gallery section if anyones interested!

Mine did the same

My Sportrak pulled to the side slightly after a sticking brake caliper was fixed. The easiest way to level it out again was on a very quiet straight road. (usually around an industrial estate on a Sunday) accelerate to about 50-60mph and do an emergency stop. Afterwards hopefully it should all be fine!

Its an old trick apparently.
