Sporty suspension

Forum:

This is probably a stupid question but how do I tell if the rear suspension needs replacing? None of the bars are broken and I know the sportrak hasn’t got the most comfortable of rides but at what point would you say this isn’t right? I hope some of you might know what I’m talking about.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi, basically it depends on

Hi, basically it depends on the sag of the rar end. Does the rear roll a lot cornering?? If it does and you have bouncy suspension, then chances are the springs will need replacing. If you do i`d suggest getting them before they snap, as if that happens the suspension has failed and is very dangerous if your moving.
I got mine fom www.milneroffroad.co.uk, and they are great. 4+1 and bought the shackle kit and new HD shocks.

Agreed, if the back end's

Agreed, if the back end's sitting a bit low and it's rolling a fair bit then your leaves are tired.
While you're under there have a good old wiggle with a long bar to check for excessive movement in all bushes (Shackle to body and front spring bushes).
Also look for bad corrosoin or damage to u-bolts, nuts, shock mounts etc, check the shock bodies for signs of fluid leakage too.
I got a new pair of 2+1 leaves made up with 1.5 inch lift by SMJ Products in Leeds, £160 inc vat and shipping iirc, good guys to deal with.
As for poor comfort, well that's the nature of the beast with Sportys, having said that mine's better than stock after new springs, longer shackles and new shocks.

Drivers Side

hi

I have a problem on drivers side back wheel - the body is sitting lower on the back drivers side than on the passengers? What could be the issue and does it sound expensive?

quote

hi i have been quoted £240 to replace one of my rear leaf springs as it has broken in two places - does this seem excessive, my mechanic told me that the parts make up the bulk of this cost.

Leaf Springs

That sounds like a total rip-off to me.

Try www.milneroffroad.com, their leaf springs are £47.00 + VAT.

It shouldn't be very difficult to fit either. I had to change a leaf spring on a hilux once, and it took less than an hour.

thanks

going to get from milner now have spoken to mechanic and his supplier was going to charge £160 +VAT for the springs. Said i could get for £47 so going ahead and now gettin two which he will happily fit.

Thanks for the help

Id also get a new set of u

Id also get a new set of u bolts, and upper rear poly bushes.
Worth it, as i snapped every nut off removing the u bolts. And i was hesitant about getting a set glad i did!!!

Glad you havent been ripped off tho mate!!

Although if you have a car jack then do it yourself, as its not that hard!!! Worst bit is if the front rubbers have welded themselves to the bolts, and the metal tube the bolts fit through.

shackels

where can i get longer shackels

Sportrak rerar springs

Help, I have replaced my rear springs with Milners kits. I have one snag, I cannot get the nut head on the centre of the springs to locate in the hole in the rear axle housing. Any suggestions how I can line it up?

Replacing rear leaf springs

I recently replaced the rear leaf springs on our '93 Fourtrak TDX. The leaf spring kit was supplied by Graham Dewhirst Daihatsu in Darwen(although I think this was a Milner kit). It took me two full days in total over a weekend to remove the old and replace the new springs, not a pleasant way to spend a weekend but it was worthwhile for the £sd saved.

The technique I found successful through persevearance and experimentation to line up the spring with the rear axle locator was firstly to mount the rear of the leaf spring on the hanger at the rear of the vehicle, then line up the axle and spring , loosely attatch the U bolts to hold in position, finally followed by locating the front of the leaf spring onto the suspension mounting. This was achieved by manipulating two jacks , one on the body (at the rear) and one on the rear axle whilst lining up the rear spring with the suspension mounting nearest the front of the vehicle.

The vehicle failed an MOT with both leaf springs broken , each 14 years old and passed when I replaced them. Difficult part was removing the originals, not through corrosion as I greased them every 12 months but the mounting bushes required a Sykes Pickavent hydraulic extractor to move them. Fitting the new bushes also required a tin of WD 40.

Hope this helps.

another pointer

just so i know what i should order is it just the Rear Leaf Spring 3+1 (includes poly bushes) that i need? £47 or do i need to order any other parts that are required for fitting?

thanks
matt

Extra Parts

It depends on what the condition of the old parts are in.

Personally, I would spend the extra £15-20 and get new u-bolts and fittings to be on the safe side.

If you speak to Milners, they are very helpful, and will advise you whats best.

Extra PArts

ok will do thanks again

Jeez for that price id do em

As sportrakwiltshire said rip off!!
Jeez for that price id do em for you, and travel there from Wales!!!!
And that would be for both springs with new polybushes etc etc, basically milner products!!!
Get a set from them mate, but make sure you get 2!!!

springs

The old cart springs eventually straighten and the rear end sags. The MOT "should" pick this up for you but it depends on the Station. Milner off road are excellent for replacements and I've noticed some are now appearing on eBay as well so plenty of options on price. Some newer Sortys (my Anjou 1996) have less leaves and I think make the ride softer. I also have a 1991 EXI and have replaced one of the heavier springs that broke plus both shocks, all from Milner and they come with poly bushes. Forget the electric shocks i you have to replace as they are hard tocome by and will cost an earth.

Thanks, it doesn't sit low

Thanks, it doesn't sit low as you've described. It’s perfectly level in fact. I guess I’m just a bit paranoid, at least I’ll know what to look for in future.
Anybody know the life-span of the electronic shocks?

92 Feroza Suspension

Does the 92 Feroza only use shocks in the front and shocks and leafs in the back??? I changed the old electric shocks for new gas shocks and still feel every bump on the pavement. It has improved but not as much as i was expecting. Is there any way to modify the suspension, say installing aftermarket springs or coilovers or suspension from a newer model??
If anybody has experimented with improving the suspension on these jeeps please advise.
