Petrol carburettor problem float and needle valve shortage

I have a C reg 2.0 petrol fourtrak and it will run fine for 20 mins and then when it is idling the revs drop and it stalls and floods. i have been told it might need new float and needle valve but daihatsu have told me they are on back order and could take a year to get !!! is there any where else to get them from Unknw any help you have would be good

First thing to do is to strip

First thing to do is to strip the carb, and give it all a good clean -the hinge pins for the float may have become fouled with debris from all those years use, and similarly the needle valve.
I'd also bet it's similar to may other Toyotas and the like, so if no joy with cleaning it, go to a breakers and have a look.

In case the comment from Dave has confused you (that is if you didn't know already) the 3Y engine (2Ltr Daihatsu 4trak Petrol) is acteally a Toyota lump. Fited in the Hi-Lux, and I believe the Toyota people carrier (what ever that's called). It is quite often cheaper to go to a Toyota dealer for spares for this engine.
