Turbo vacuum thingy?

Forum:

Hi Folks, I'm in the middle of putting a 2.8 Turbo engine and gearbox in my non turbo SWB Fourtrak. I'm fully able to make provisions for the extra intercooler pipes and extra brackets etc. However there is a sensor on the near side inner wing on my donor vehicle that connects via a small vacuum pipe to the round black unit in the top of the turbo. This sensor also plugs into the loom. What does this do? Is it needed? There is no provision for it on my SWB. If it is essential where should I wire it to?
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!
Many Thanks Chris.

vacuum thingy

Hi tunner this valve is conected to a switch on gear box when you select third gear it puts your turbo on full time it is to give more towing power but it kills third gear

Brilliant

Many Thanks for that. I was wondering what the hell I was going to do. It's quite an easy modification in that case. Just herd wire it in. Do you know if it switches live or earth?

Turbo vacuum thingy

Hi tunner i just put a switch on dashboard so i could have turbo fulltime when i wanted it but it destroyed the gear box after about 6.000 miles just leave it disconnected unless you dont mind changing the box often daihatsu dealers where instructed to disconnect them when ever they got chance ie when you took it for service

Connected

Hi Jako, I've made up a little loom for it and it seems to be working perfectly, However it operates on first gear not third. I spent quite some time after wiring it up to realise that the switch on the gearbox was selective only for first. I'll disconnect it and see how it feels, I fitted a brand new rear prop from Milner offroad last night it goes like a little rocket now I've got the intercooled TD engine in it.
Many thanks for your advice.

It is called the PCS (Power

It is called the PCS (Power Control System), and when first gear is selected, the bypass valve allows some pressure from the inlet manifold to be diverted away from the boost compensator on the fuel pump. This gives you less fuel in first gear, hence less power. It does nothing related to the turbo, only the fuel pump.

I took the black tube off the inlet manifold and blocked it up with a bolt and a hose clamp, and now first gear goes like a rocket!
