YRV 4-Trak - Replacing standard lump with Turbo 130 one

2001 51 reg Jade Green YRV 4-Trak:

Hi, my dad's had this car for 5 years now and seeing as I've only just passed my test (Thursday 18th Jan), he's looking for a new one and passing this beautiful little car onto me. I was wondering, is it possible/difficult to transplant a Turbo 130 engine into the bay of my YRV? Does the ECU need swapping and would I need to do any modification to the actual shell of the car? Would there be much fabrication involved?

Thanks

Matt

May be easier to aquire a complete engine complete with ECU and turbo for this project, funnily enough I had wondered about using the 4 Trak's 4wd on my YRV 130 Turbo, but keeping the auto box for simplicity.

Remember there are some minor under bonnet details to consider in this swap, not least the exhaust; the bonnet and intercooler scoop and the washer bottle!

It might be more straight forward to increase your power out put with and induction kit and sports exhaust and a remap if you can find the right tuner. Good Luck!

Hi, thanks, yeah I was thinking of looking for some form of write-off somewhere and transplanting the usual bits. Shouldn't be too hard, not as bad as a Sierra for instance, but then again, it might need some work. Would it be possible to buy a Turbo model and transplant the gearbox and 4wd system from my car into the Turbo? Does anyone make anything like a camshaft kit for the YRV, or are we just limited to induction kits and sports exhausts?

Thanks

Matt

As far as modifications go,

As far as modifications go, you are only limitied by the size of your pocket. Turbos, suspension, remaps, race/fast road camshafts etc are all availiable- ian @ big performance in egham in surrey will be able to sort you for that- but be aware that you'll be looking at big money for them.

But you'll lose about 20-25% through the 4x4 drive train, you'll have to use a gearbox from a yaris t-sport, uprate the clutch & drive shafts etc... would'nt it be cheaper to just buy an early turbo 130?

I'd be careful though, you say that you've only just passed your test- get used to the car you have first before messing with it, the turbo 130 is a vicious engine if things get a little wonky!

Thanks for the info, much

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Also, thanks for the heads up about messing with turbo parts. Only thing I don't like about the actual Turbo 130 itself is the auto 'box. Would there be any modifications that I could do that would make the car more driveable lower down in the 'rev range? Not looking for too much power out of it, but having the power and torque available when pulling onto a dual-carriageway without having to drop a cog and 'razz' it would be nice. Would it take much to drop the manual 'box and 4wd system into a Turbo? Thinking about keeping her standard until I've got enough experience and money to chop and change a few bits.

Thanks once again
Matt

Being honest with such a low

Being honest with such a low power output i dont see 4wd really helping you out unfortunately.
As mentioned above you will loose quite a bit more power at the wheels as your having to drive more differentials, drive shafts etc.
Sure i will be honest, i love 4wd but on this car , the 130hp isnt going to really benefit that much, perhaps a little in the wet and thats it.
To get 4wd into the YRV turbo, im not too sure, but doing a similar conversion with suzuki's swift you would need to get a 4wd floorpan and remove the standard one. Not 100% sure if you would have to on the YRV , but a very good idea to find out before buying expensive parts Wink

ps: My option would be to get inlet manifold, turbo and exhaust, turbo bonnet, boost hoses and intercooler. Not to mention ecu , injectors, fuel rail etc etc etc. You couldnt run it at high boost with the high compression 1.3 N/A engine( stick to the stock yrv turbo boost ), but due to the high compression you would probably end up matching or making even more power than the stock yrv turbo, you would have a manual box, and the 4wd Smile .
Much easier than swapping drivetrain / chassis parts.

I wouldnt bother trying to

I wouldnt bother trying to convert, For the price you can pickup a YRV Turbo for it's not worth the hassle.
