F75 lwb 1991 starting problems - starter relay / wiring ?

Forum:

Help me Oh Wise Ones, you're my only hope. I've been having fun with my fourtrak for some time now. The simple description for it is to say that on some (and only some) occasions, it just won't start. After replacing, the contacts in the solenoid and buying a new starter relay (not cheap and now for sale by the way), I still have the same problem. I can start my little angel by hot wiring her straight from the battery, but this does little to impress when it's cold / raining, or both ! I've established that there are 4 wires to the starter relay under the glove box, 1 live feed (yellow and black) 1 feed to solenoid (white) 1 earth (white and black) and another (white and black with silver flecks). It's the last of these wires that I think is causing my problem. I'm satisfied that the Earth is secure, the feeds in and out function as predicted, but I have no idea where this last little one goes or what it does. I've tested it to establish that it does not create a test voltage when grounded to earth or provide an earth for voltage when tested. Sorry it's so long but I thought the more details the better.

Could this be the feed from

Could this be the feed from the key? To tell the 'box'/relay to tell the solanoid to 'go'? Only a guess I'm afraid. It could be simply that your key barel is warn, and not working all the time.
You could (if this proves to be the problem) wire up a self returning push button on the dash to replace the key barel 'start' position. Less expensive than a new key barrel. And keep the same key. Just remember to take the live feed to the new switch from stage 2 of the ignition, so the engine can't be started without the key being turned.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
