Another hijet cutting out

Forum:

I've had a look through the old posts and can't find exactly the same problem that I'm having.

The model's a 1999 petrol hijet efi.

My hijet cuts out when slowing down,If you can get it out of gear quick enough when braking it will often keep going. It's always okay for the first few miles of running it but as soon as the engine starts to warm up it stops as soon as you slow. It'll always start again straight away but as soon as you slow, again will cut.

If anyone has any ideas at all I would be very grateful.

Thanks
Graham

HIJET CUTTING OUT

This could be a number of things from a coil breaking down, lead failure, gummed plugs or injectors. Have you tried running some injector cleaner through the system that may un gum them. Have a look at your plugs, are they fouled with oil which may indicate oil being drawn up the side of the pistons and smothering the spark. This is unlikely as the Van start immediately and smoke would be noticable in the exhaust. Look at the easy parts before moving on to the sensors. The ECU has self protect built in and if a sencor is breaking down the ECU will stop the engine to protect it. Normally such shut downs are not self correcting and have to be cancelled from the ECU memory. I suppose it's worth checking the LT side of the coil for a breakdown in the joints. If you start the engine and wiggle the LT wires and it stops then perhaps you have a dodgy LT connection that is moving about and cutting the engine. As I said it could be so many things and these are just ideas, some quite wild but possible. I'm sure another forum member may have a better idea.

hijet cutting out

Thanks for the helpful reply.

I changed the plugs last week as this was my first thought, the old plugs were not oily and looked fine, have just checked plug leads and coil and all seem okay.Next will be injector cleaner but in the meantime my other thought is the fuel filter.I've read posts on here about the in line fuel filter, can anyone confirm that this is located next to the fuel tank and is between the tank and the cat as it is not a type of filter I have seen before,I'm used to seeing the plastic universal type. This if I'm correct seems to be a much larger (3 inch by about 2 inch diameter unit.I've had a look on my service manual but this isn't shown on it.
