Sportrak not ticking over when cold

Forum:

Hello there

I'd like some advice please on a 1991 Sportrak 1600cc. She starts on the key perfectly but I cannot rev her until she is warmed up. This is quite annoying because she needs to be started, left to tick over on the drive whilst I finish my cup of tea in the mornings before I can get in her and drive away. If I try to rev her (not excessively - just enough to get the clutch to bite) she will cut out. All helpful suggestions greatfully received.

Blocked jets.

Sounds like a fuel mixture/choke problem.
Carb system.
If its a carb engine get it hot. Remove the air filter. Keep the revs high and SLOWLY pour about half-egg-cup of redex directly into the carb ... dont let the revs die. Keep the revs until all the smoke disappears.
Alternatively remove the air flter, run until hot. Then rev the engine and use a smooth lint free folded cloth [cotton] to sufficiently block the air intake so the cars 'sucks' at the cloth. The vacuum often clears any blocked jets. Dont loose and cloth into the carb!

Fuel Injection.
If its fuel injection then add redex/fuel additive [obtain at your motor diy shop] into the fuel tank. Run as usual for a few days and see it the problem clears.

Dear Mace
Thank you for your advice. She is a fuel injection and so I will follow your advice and let you know the results. Thank you. Chris

Also ...........

Also check the fuel filter is not blocked. If you cant identify it -- message to my message box and include your email and I will attach a pic of the filter.

Tickover

I agree that it may be blocked jets and the solution suggested should sort it over a period of runnin.
I am surprised that the EC isn't showing up an error as it may well be a temperature sencor on the inlet side. If a problem occurs that may damage the engine the ECU usually shuts things down and goes into self protect mode. It checks all the sencors constantly and adjusts the air fuel mixture accordingly. Under normal circumstances thememory of the ECU has to be cleared once thefaltis located so I thinkit is unlikely to be your problem, however if the REDEX solution doesn't work I can email you the pages from the manual on fault finding using a link on the ECU plug. It is a Daihatsu Manual so it's not a bodge. Basically by removing two specif plugs from the GREEN block to the right of the coil and connecting these togther with a piece of wire, then switching on the igniion the engine light will flash a number of times. The number of flashes obtained indicates a fault on a chart, eg 1 flash may be the LAMDA Sensor etc. Once all faults are dealt wih 12 flashes cancels all the faults and indicates that all is OK. If I recall the last tme i had problems it indicated a temperature problem on the Plenium sencor, a brown sencor on the side of the ALLOY bit with INJECTION on it. I had to remove and check the voltage in warm water and compare it to the Manual. Mine was OK and replaced and the check system re done and the next fault checked. Mine turned out to be the coil and nothing to do with a sencors and I finally got the 12 flashes. You can get a Manual on CD off ebay. I have one and it is a complete copy of the full paper manual that I have, £85 12 years ago. I will check this and ensure it has the check details and if it does then I may be able to copy it for you.

Good luck

Lets hope the Redex does the job.
