Hi. I am new to this so be patient. My 1994 Independent has a weird problem. Sometimes I go to start it and after the glow lamp goes out the starter does nothing, I can hear a click which sounds like its coming from underneath the bonnet then it will start no problem all day,the other thing it does is when you turn the key to the start position some times there is a delay then it starts fine. Are there any relays anywhere? This does not happen all the time. Anyone got any ideas before I get my meter out of retirement!!

hi i have a 1995 independent and i have the same problem . Would like to no what the problem is as well .Adam
The clicking you hear, about
The clicking you hear, about once a second for about 10-15 secs, is the glowplug relay. Usually heard on a cold morning, as the glowplugs heat up. You wont hear it so much when the motor is warm as there is a sensor which overides the relay when the motor is warm. This relay, on the older models, is under a black plastic cover on the RHS between mudguard and battery. If you touch the cover when its clicking, you can feel it. Its completely normal, and nothing to worry about.
As for hard starting, extended cranking over on the starter when cold, would be a faulty glowplug or two.

Live conector
The first place to look id the big live feed to the back of the starter. If it's not ridiculously tight then that will cause the starter to just click. I've had this several times, You need to tighten it up to the point of almost stripping the thread. It may of course be something else but it's a quick, Easy and sometimes a very simply fix.

STARTER
If it is the starter solonoid not engaging, it should be easy to fix.
I easily sorted out my Charade starter even though i was told it was knackered and needed reconditioning.
I am sure the basics for yours are the same as the Charade, just take it apart.
Nothing jumps out but take care and remember what went where.
Believe me you dont have to be skilled to do it.
When you give it power the shaft pops out making contact with a 2 small copper bracket like contacts that send power to the motor.
It rubs against the contacts and eventualy wears them to the point they cant make contact anymore.
I was quoted £70 to recon it, went back a few days later with the contacts in hand and bought them for about £2!!!!
Only difference now, its not been spray painted like a recon.
It realy is worth having a go assuming you do have a place to buy the parts from.
If you get stuck i am sure other members have a drawing of the parts breakdown.
Good luck,
Dave.

Starter Motor
Hi,
i took a charade starter apart today to jog my memory on how to change the solonoid contacts.
It is realy easy, probably harder actualy taking starter off the engine.
The two small copper L shaped contacts about 1cm in size can be found behind the screw off shield shaped cap that is situated at the back - the opposite end of the toothed gear.
There is probably 3 hex pozi screws holding the cap in place.
The contacts are held in place by the threaded posts that the battery power bolts to and the other post on the oposite side that conects the solonoid to the motor.
The solonoid shaft can be lifted away leaving a long thin spring behind, to give you space to get them out.
Also examine the copper disc on this shaft and you will see arcs and pitting.
Smooth this out with a fine file or abrasive paper.
Now you will also see the L shaped contacts are also worn etc.
Tap the threaded posts inward and remove the contacts.
If the contacts are not that badly worn, clean them and lift them up slightly when you replace them, making sure both are the same level.
The contacts have a sloted hole to allow you to adjust the sitting height.
I found it best to set them as high as the slot allows, lightly tighten each post then press the solonoid shaft down to push them level , then fully tighten the posts.
Remember the order of the post bits, its post, o ring, plastic cup, steel washer into cup then nut.
Sorry its so long but its best i can explain.
Hope this helps.
Anyway if you dont need it now it will come in handy in future!
Dave.

Adam. Have put electrical switch / contact cleaner down igition key hole, diconnected battery to save glow plug relay going mental, and switced on and off about 10 times and to the start position about ten times, the switch seems to be less sloppy, and touch wood is working fine so far. its worth a try. Cheers Roger.
i've had the exact problem,
i've had the exact problem, i fixed it by getting a whole new starter put in. i found over time the delay in starting became worse. though once it had started i was fine allday.
also starting it while it was knackered did a number on my glow plugs which added to the expense of the replacement.
1, 2 or 3.
1. Could be lack of battery power. Insufficient watts to turn the motor - takes a few moments to discharge sufficient power to engage the windings to twist the magnets. Try fully charging the battery.
2. Next clean all battery connections and each connection between battery and starter.
3. Starter motor faulty. Basic problem could be the carbon brushes need renewing.
PS .. diesel car battery. A standard car 'petrol' battery is insufficient to start a diesel. Diesels need aditional plates inside the battery to boost the watts. Wrong battery will suffer and loose its efficiency, hence diesels starting problems. Has someone fitted a cheaper 'petrol engine' battery to your vehicle?
starter motor
hi dodger
i thought i would add my tuppence worth
clicking of glow plug relay more like a clonk but heard repeatly after the glow plug warning light goes out correct but do me a favour check the earth bolt near the glow plugs as that can wiggle loose (took me a day to find that one)at the firewall end of the glowplug rail but the engine would turn over
incorrect battery by that i mean not enough power in the battery to engange the starter you would not hear the engine turn
sticking starter motor solenoid as it tries to engange the starter to turn the engine
wear in the ignition barrel or key resulting in the electrical connection to the starter not being made
anyway good lock

starter probs
Thank for the reply. The battery is ok, I know about the glow relay, the clonk comes from the starter motor, I suspect it is a lazy solenoid,as someone else said they had the same prob, and turned out to be the starter.Looks like the hols fund is not the Bahamas any more, but brighton.Cheers .will post findings when the time comes.
