Sportrak Tyre choice - clear up the confusion!

Forum:

Hi all,

My Sporty has 225/70R15 tyres on, and I need to fit some MT's.

Even the tyre dealers seem to give varying advice as to the best size to fit - not many choices, if any in std.

Some say 215/75R15 - this keeps diameter etc very similar, others say 235/75R15 will not rub, then there is 30/9.50R15 etc.

Any real life stories out there to help me, and good tyre choices. I quite fancy Insa Sahara'a, Greenway Macho's, Kuhmo KL71's and GY MTR's.

I would appreciate any good advice!!

Thanks

Had 215R15 BF Goodrich's on

Had 215R15 BF Goodrich's on mine. AT's on the front, MT's on the back. Never had any troble. Pulling and exceleration were good due to smaller tyre size, and fule consumption was not as bad as when it had bigger tyres as the engine was not straining just to hold 65. Good for medium difficulty off road with that tyre configeration too. And a whole lot of fun on the road in the wet with the MT's on the back.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

New Tyres

I have now got a set of 235/75R15 Good Year MT/R's. They look fantastic and don't seem too bad on the road. Time to find some mud!

Do those 235/75/R15 fit on

Do those 235/75/R15 fit on the standard rims that come with a Sportrak? (ie. the ones that come with 225/75/R15 tyres)?

I'd like some bigger ones for the rear (ooh mrs!) because my rear end slides when I floor it coming off a corner in the rain too Smile

hmmmm.... stay smaller....

Over here in NZ I have my Rocky running on the standard 205/70/15's at the moment. I can't go to a 30/10.5/15, because they rub at the front at full lock. I would go for a 215/75/15, as they will fit on your standard rims and still fit under the front. I find with the 205/70's I'm revving fairly high at 60mph/100kph so the slightly higher profile will hopefully help this a little.

Tyres

I have 225/25/75 HANKOOKS AT The cheapest I could get and they have lasted better than Goodyears M&S and Generals 2000 M&S The compound is not too hard and I have had no problems in the rai. The Goodyears wore out rapidly and let go in wet conditions on braking let alone cornering. Much the same for the Generals.

You need to get a balance between soft compound which will grip but wear rapid and firm compound like michilins that let go but wear slowly. The Hankooks seem to fit the bill and are AT

whats what then

Right firstly - cos i get wound up over this cos its so simple but everyone gets it wrong 31/10.50 r15 is the equivalant to 255/75/15 ok and secondly 30/9.50 r15 is the equivalant to 235/75/15 ok, also quite often the standard size if its not on the tyre for 215's is actually 215/80 r15, the first number is the width in metric mm the second number is the profile width, this is a percentage of the first number, so the higher the percentage the better off you are for off roading because your tyre overall dimension will be bigger, ok , the other tyre dimensions such as 31 10.5 r15 is the imperial way of measuring a tyre, so i hope that has answered a few scratched heads, and lastly greenway machos or extreme trekker type off road tyres are the best for mud they say goodbye and goodnight to any mud terrain type tyre, the treads are huge. Good to see someone understands it!

Its so hard trying to explain tire measurements to some folk... Try my wife! haha. Anyway, my question is... what is a greenway macho? Obviously an off road tire... any chance someone could email a pic or something? We don't have them on this side of the planet and I'm interested since you guys have so much damn mud!

greenway machos

Hi, greenway is a brand of remould tyres and macho is one of the tyre tread type that they make, i think they are a french company but lots of companies in the uk have them, they sell very well, i got mine from www.tyresdirectuk.co.uk if you look at this site youll see the treads etc that we are on about, ok matey.
