Sportrak misfire

Forum:

I've noticed of late that the sporty 'misses a beat' quite often, the tacho shows 800 rpm, but dips every couple of seconds as it misses a couple of cylinders. Anyhow, today I was towing a horsebox, and the misfire became quite severe, making it difficult to accellerate beyond 40mph. Then it cleared, and we were away.

I'm thinking Points, Condensor, Spark plugs perhaps and I'll check these at the weekend, does anyone have any other ideas for things that might be worth checking?

Have you bought petrol from

Have you bought petrol from Tesco in the last month or so?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

id check the dizzy cap to

id check the dizzy cap to make sure theres no condensation in it, it may be cracked.

the points may be to blame but if its not all the time i wouldnt look past electrics (ie compression-pistonrings etc)

check:

wires
distribution cap
plugs
rotor arm

finally coil

Tesco petrol

Actually I do buy Tesco Petrol - but surely if rubbish petrol had damaged the Oxygen sensor, it would misfire constantly, not just on occasion?

misfire

hi

depends if the problem is getting worse all the time as the los system would only kick in once it reaches a certain level

you could try disconnecting the lambada sensor and seeing if the problem occurs

whilst your checking the high/low tension circuits i would check for a broken or loose earth strap stupid i know but you wouldnt believe the hassle i had finding that one when my fourtrak was being a pain to start and run

MISFIRE

I have experienced similar problems and in the end total falure. It was the coil which was dumping all its power to Earth. You can replace it with a normal coil to test this as the proper coils are quite expensive and not shelf items. I did this and retained the lower clip. This instantly cured the problem and a replacement was obtained from a local factor, not Daihatsu, plus a spare which has never been needed. They were around the £40 mark about 4 years ago. Don't overlook the leads as they do not last for ever and the plugs. Leads break down internally and externally and the type used with a carbon centre fail over a perios. The isulation goes and allows moisture to get between the gaps inthe carbon. The princial of the gaps is to intesify the power by makng it jump the gaps. If these are full of moisture then the lead fails.

You don't say whether the car is Injection or carb. If injection then the Dizzy Cap and rota arm sould be checked for cracks or tracking lines on the inside of the cap. The rota arm should be in good condition and the brass end sould be cleaned on the edge of a tyre not with a file.

I hope this give you food for thought

I had a similar problem on

I had a similar problem on two occasions, first one I found myself, turned out to be a vacuum retard pipe had fallen off the carb, replaced pipe and problem went away. Second time, again was a vacuum retard problem but I'd just had the engine replaced after fitting a new front diff, seems the mechanic had knocked the multi-way vacuum port right at the back of the head and snapped a nipple off, caused the tick-over to slow right down as the engine warmed up and occasionally cut out altogether. Both times I experienced periods of normal performance interspersed with poor running.
