HiJet for Mongol Rally - London to Mongolia this Summer

Forum:

Hi everyone.

Me and two mates have registered to do the Mongol Rally this summer www.mongolrally.com and we are considering doing it in a HIJET MPV.
We're thinking about the HIJET as there will be three of us and a load of spares and other stuff we'll have to take with us so the extra space will be a bonus.
There is also a 1 litre engine restriction for the rally so the HIJET is the best option we could come up with - but if anyone has any better ideas please let me know.

Ive got two questions really -
1. How reliable and easy to fix is the HIJET?
2. Does anyone know where we could source a HIJET MPV cheap? - Were thinking < £500

Thanks in advance for your help

Hijet to mongolia

Comeon guys someone on here must have an opinion... even if its to tell me that im totally nuts to even contemplate it!

Thanks again, Andy

Sounds like a good laugh.

Sounds like a good laugh. Good luck with it. I'm getting envious of you going. The ones I've seen pop up alot on ebay, autotrader and the loot although the ones I've noticed maybe just over £500. I've not paid much attention to the ebay prices but you could always search the completed listings.

there is one in hounslow if that is close by too you i will leave you the guys email if interested, it needs abit of work but the van looks really good its a 96 model and needs new water puump, rocket cover and rear brakes he asking £100,
he has other spare parts as well, even original hijet alloys which he wants £100 for but that was abit too much for me i bought the bullbars of him for £30 and headed home,
if you want his contact number i will email it to you

Hijet

Thanks for the offer but i'm really looking for one which I can drive away with an MOT.
One with lots of cosmetic rust would be perfect as it would drive the price down. Ill just have to keep an eye out on ebay!
If anyone has seen a car like this for sale or is selling one please let me know at - eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%61%6e%64%79%64%65%61%6e%31%31%37%40%68%6f%74%6d%61%69%6c%2e%63%6f%6d%22%3e%61%6e%64%79%64%65%61%6e%31%31%37%40%68%6f%74%6d%61%69%6c%2e%63%6f%6d%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b'))

Thanks.

Go for it :-)

...but without meaning to steal any of your 'thunder', you're not the 1st to opt for a hijet...

Maybe getting in contact with them would give you the richest (and most relevent) information.... alternatively, you can go it 'blind' Smile

I'm in the process of converting my Hijet into a camper/tourmobile.... bed, cooker, sink etc... plus a carputer, gps, 12" sub, ps2.... you get the picture Wink

Good luck in whatever you decide to make the journey in... you'll be fine Smile

Cheap Hi-Jet

Hi there,

Have you found your wagon yet for the rally? I saw this on ebay:

Good luck to you. I think you have chosen the right type of vehicle. Everything I hear about Hi-Jets is great. Reliability, in particular. Just watch out for the bits like window regulators and door handles. They're delicate.

I have found the dealers to be a total rip off for repairs. I try to scrounge parts on ebay and I use a family mechanic who I trust. Somebody mentioned a guy on ebay who's selling sliding door repair parts. I have spoken to him on the phone about a problem with my petrol tank not venting and he's quite helpful, although his advice didn't solve the problem I had.

I think ebay is best for sourcing Hi-Jets too. I bought mine on ebay. Personally, I'm totally in love with Hi-Jets. Have been watching the others on her, particularly Harvey. He's modifying his. Anyways, again, good luck and enjoy!

Looks good!

Looks like that one'd be perfect! hehe 3 seats and space to sleep, too.... nice and grubby, and the blacked-out windows really complement the vile green colour well Smile The rear end looks unusually high, though..? Scratch one-s head

It might work well climbing

It might work well climbing steep hills in Mongolia although I wouldn't like to go down a hill in it!

Bought it!

How funny is that!... I havent been on here for a while but we bought that hijet a few days ago!!! Went for 470 which was more than we really wanted to spend but atleast were sorted for a car now!

On the drive home we had to push start it when we stopped for petrol but my mate got in it yesterday and turned the key and it started first time!... strange but we have a mate who's a mechanic who'll give it a good look over.

Thanks for your help guys!
