Fourtrak loss of power

Forum:

Hi,I took my 4trak to the garage and they cant find whats up with it - i wonder if anyone here can shed some light on it... Basically it feels a bit gutless, especially when towing.i was towing an empty 1 1/2 tonne trailer and it was struggling up small hills.when the trailer was full i had to use low range lots.I got my mate (fellow 4trak driver) to give it a drive and he confirmed that it was seriously underpowered. I havent had it long and never really noticed it before apart from thinking a 2.8 turbo should fly up hills a bit better...but i certainly notice it now when towing...also i can hear a sound that rises in pitch as i go faster but i dont hear a turbo kick in.feel a bit of something but i think thats just the gears sweet spot.

Had to replace the clutch and now i see why - the clutch must have taken alot of stick being played against an underpowered engine with big loads on the back...i dont want to burn another one so please help!

Thanks for any help,

Joe

Fuel pump.

I am sure your garage will have checked, but on the DL52 Turbodiesel engine there is an air pipe from the outlet side of the turbocharger running across the top of the engine that should be connected to a chamber on top of the fuel injection pump. The purpose of this is to match the fuel delivery according to the charge air pressure. If this pipe is disconnected or damaged, the fuel injection pump will reduce the fuelling rate and the power delivery. It might also be that the diaphram in this chamber might be split.

On my Fourtrak (DL52 turbo engine) the Turbo starts to become effective at around 1900 rpm.

This rising sound your hearing, does it occur in all the gears? It does sound sort of turbo related.

Other than that the usual suspects are Air filter, fuel filter.

Does the vehicle blow out excessive black smoke under load?

Fine when its going but a pain when it's not!

i would say air filter.

i would say air filter. deffo.

the rising sound your hearing will be the engine sucking air through a small hole. you get it a small amount when you fit a k&n and other style cone filter, its like a feint whistling.

i mistakenly thought i had blown a pipe on my TDi focus, but get the bonnet up and get someone to rev it for you while you listen. i can guarantee its the air filter blocked.

change the filter, and probe out the connected pipework for leaves and dead birds etc.

hope this helps

PM me if you need Sportrak Help..

Thanks for your help - the

Thanks for your help - the garage changed the fuel filter and there is a noticable difference, but i wouldnt say its how a 2.8 td should be just yet...it does sometimes blow black smoke when under a heavy load...

first port of call sounds like the air filter and fuel pump/lines...i ll give it a whirl.

cheers for your help,
