Sportrak M.A.P sensor

Forum:

My ELXi 96 sportrak has had an cutting out problem similar to another post. the nature of the fault is a non-starter from cold, but when started its fine. a squirt of easy start fired it into life, the spark was fine. After the electrics have been checked, the mechanic reackons its the M.A.P sensor.
Does any one know where to get one of these sensors, anyone have one on the shelf.
Have tried emailing all the usual breakers, plus ebay. awaiting their responses.

Does this MAP sensor cause cutting out problems.? I'am not filled by confidence as this is the third attempt to fix the problem, last breakdown my wife got stranded in the middle of the night. oops.

thats a bit vague but ill

thats a bit vague but ill have a go. the MAP sensor is basically a Mass Air Pressure sensor inside your fuel injection system which measure the air going into the engine, and works out with the ECU how much fuel to inject to the cylinders.

if this had gone, it would run like a bag of shit all the time as you would either be flooded or not have enough fuel.

if your saying its something where it wont start from cold then starts fine, i would say its either your distcap, or your coil. a dist cap would be my first port of call as a replacement off the shelf is about £9. next i would make sure all your HT leads are sevriceable and tidy.

finally if all that is ok check the coil, perhaps see if you can get one from another sportrak but make sure it wasnt the electrics that made the seller break it obviously.

the best thing about these items is you could replace them as a service - you also know then by elimination whats wrong and what works.

i woudl also check to see if your air filter is clean.

check your air flow meter too. this is what measures how hot or cold the air temp is and sends the data to the ECU, and in turn this injects the right amount of fuel for the mix. if this is trout your engine will be like a bag of spanners. a quick fix for your air sensor is to get a "+BHP+ cheap chip from ebay, theyre about a £1. its basically a resistor you put inside your air flow meter plug which delivers a constant reading to the ECU and increases fuel input, and therefore BHP. if your engine still has running problems with this installed, its not your air flow sensor and you just tested it without having to buy a replacement. if it runs ok, you found your fault.

if all THAT doesnt cure it, try the MAP sensor from another vehicle or see if Milner Offroad sells them (in the links section, theyre very cheap and i recommend them.)

sorry for all that waffling.

Sportrak M.A.P sensor

Cheers for the post Paul.

Mechanic has fitted new cap and rotar arm, haven't changed the coil yet.

When it conked out last it had a great spark, but it wasn't having none of it till the easy start went down the air intake, then fired straight away.

R.A.C dude said fuel problem.

Thanks for the link, will ring them this morning.

i reckon its just dampness,

i reckon its just dampness, if you had a fuel problem relating to the pump/injectors/throttlebody/map sensor it would be running like a kettledrum all the time not just at startup.

if its just startig her up thats that problem, i would point the finger at dampness at the coil or associated earths.

milner offroad are by far the best place to buy sportrak gear, theyre cheap as chips for new gear.

MAP sensor

Paul.
The symptoms are weird it will start cold then after a couple of minutes running it will completely cut out.
Yet other times it won't start at all. But once running its o.k again. The reason i say cold, its never done it whilst running warm.
Now this may only happen once twice, then nothing.
But it seems to be getting more frequent.

When it does conk, its like there is no fuel, if you rev the nuts off it, you can just keep it alive, any throttle slack or pull away kills it. when it was dead last time the spark is clear to see. The RAC said no problems with the spark. ??

Another thread had the same problem with no conclusion.

Gonna trying the chip and maybe a new coil then the MAP,
In addition does anyone know what the unit is on the top of the inlet manifold that the MAP feeds into, small unit no electrics with two vacuum pipes its sitting on the inlet manifold.
Just ordered a MAP from 24/7 44 quid delivered. i really hope its that. +BHP chip is on its way. gonna do the coil after all of that i think
Ta

MAP sensor.

I agree with Paul try the ignition system first. You can use a normal coil if you alter the connectors but a replacement from Milner is about £42.

I am about to do a diagnostic note to another forum member on how to short the diagnostic socket and get a read out of problems. I am off to the garage now and will post it on hear today. It is taken from my official DAIHATSU workshop manual and I hope quite easy to follow.
