Forum:
Went offroading a couple of weeks ago, the course wasn't all that forgiving, car was covered to the teeth in mud.
After I used a pressure washer to clean it I've noticed a strong smell of petrol towards the rear of the car, even stronger under the drivers side rear wheel arch (where the fuel cap is).
There's no fuel leaking anywhere as far as I can tell, we've inspected all the pipes from the fuel tank to the cap and there's no liquid at all, I have also checked the backflow pipe by warming the engine up then rev'ing it to 5k and then releasing the accelerator quickly, it's as dry as a desert up there.
Anyone have any ideas where it could be coming from?

your best bet it to get right underneath it and see if any hoses are trout next to the pump, and also inspect the pump. give it a very thorough wipe down and then go for a drive. with it being alloy covering you should be able to see petrol easily.
if you just went offroading, you could have bashed your tank.
have you removed the bashguard? ive just pulled my entire fuel system out of the arse end to weld and theres not much to it. if your pipes are ok, i would point to the tank has a hole in it or your pump/pump connections are leaking somewhere.
ps getting the bashguard and tank off is a nightmare.

Is the smell inside the vehicle? if so, its a common problem. There is a heap of info either here, or at Difflock, or www.outerlimits4x4.com about the split plastic tank inside the rear 1/4 panel. Do a search and you should find the answer.

smell of fuel
I know it sounds silly but check the fuel cap. The original little ones can go on twisted and look as if on ok but spew fuel out on corners and bumps.
I think the plastic bit is part of the breather and return fuel system. I would suspect though that the smell inside the car would be overpowering if that had gone as it would tend to flow down the wheelarch and soak the carpet. Check that the breather pipes are all secure as you may have dislodged one with the power hose. If there is no sign of a wet leak it may well be just a breather leak causing the fumes
