My sportrak needs a new engine can anybody help
hi simon
i can go through the steps with you but that is the best i can do as i`m based in north scotland however i would recommend taking the gearbox out with the engine and then splitting it rather then doing it in situ i would also consider changing the clutch/flywheel and rear crankshaft oil seal along with all the oils while in that area. you dont want to be doing the job again because of an oil leak/ knackered clutch in a couple of months. i would also consider changing all the belts and water pump with the engine out as i would feel safer knowing they where changed regardless of what the old owner said or age/mileage of the new engine
it isnt as difficult as it seems as most of the body will unbolt and clear out of the way but it is a two person job and you will need to borrow/hire/own certain things like engine hoist, decent jacks, axel stands i canged my foutrak gearbox in less than 8 hours but it wasnt the first i had done. most of the hard work is the preping making up the electrical connections fuel lines prop etc so then when you put it back in you know where it all goes. dont rush it will take longer if you do i am sure that some of the sporty drivers on this site have done this before and can warn you of any pitfalls that you are likely to find
good luck

Cheers for the advice I think I might give it a go, will any year engine fit mine if it's an L reg?
NEW ENGINE
Try Ebay as a source for the engine. Fior the L Reg you will need to get an injection model which I think were J reg on. Youwill need a hoist and to remove all the Rad and associated bits and pieces. As said it is a good Idea to fit a new clutch at the same time and although it is easier to remove the lot in one lump you may find it better to remove the box and then with bonnet off lift the engine away.
before puttiing the new replacement in change the CAM belt and the two pully belts to save more work later and to be on the safe side. Ther is plenty of room in the engine compartment once all the airbox plumbing is removed and i would replace that with a K&N anyway.
As for the current engine if you manage to get a complet unit then keep the old one for spares or strip it before discarding the block. Have you any idea whyit has no compression on No 3? It may be worth you having it checked over by an engine re builder, just a suggestion.
The breakers yards have become far too pricey these days so ebay is the best option particularly if theseller can assure you that the engine is ok. A lot may still be running in the car which is always better for peace of mind.
Hope this helps
