Dead Head Gasket?

Forum:

Hi all,
Im new to Daihatsu but have owned and still own Land Rovers.
I bought a Sportrack EFi 1993 on a K plate for her that must be obeyed to run around in and carry horsey stuff around.
It had just under 115k with 80% Service history, last shown at 97k and seemed okay when purchased.
It uses a little oil but nothing extreme. Doesnt seem to use or lose coolant either, but I will now keep a very close eye on it.
I was doing the weekly checks today and had the oil filler cap off to add some oil and noticed the dreaded "mayo" inside the cap.
It hasnt overheated and performance seems unchanged, returns 27-29mpg regularly on a combined cycle (is that okay?)
Mileage is now 116300.
Am I correct to fear the worst and that the head gasket has went or is there another explanation for the mayo?
Thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

Cheers
Tony

If it's not losing coolant it

If it's not losing coolant it's probably just condensation build up caused by short runs and not reaching normal temp.
Let it get warmed through from time to time.
Frank.

Ah deep joy, Checked the flu

Ah deep joy,
Checked the fluids yesterday and the car appears to be losing coolant.
I popped the radiator cap off and stuck my fingers in which came out feeling somewhat oily. Im afraid I fear the worst.
What do I need to know when it comes to changing head gaskets then?

Yeh tend to agree with Frank.

Yeh tend to agree with Frank..could simply be condensation build up..
is there much in the way of mayo in there Unknw ....if it aint losing coolant and temp remains normal you might just be ok....Why not flush out the old oil... change for new.. and keep an eye on it for a while to see if it returns.

Thanks for that fellas, going

Thanks for that fellas, going to keep a very, very close eye on the coolant level over the next week or so.
I think an oil change will be prudent as well.
Is the petrol consumption ok?, it isnt driven hard by any stretch of the imagination.
By the way Ive already found out about the dodgy earths on the back lights.
Otherwise what a cracking little soft roader.
