Clutch Problems

Forum:

Hello fellow Daihatsu owners. I am asking anybody with a Sportrak if they can help me. 6 months ago my 1991 Sporty's clutch started to slip in 3rd and 4th (it would shoot up to 3500 revs but I didnt have that amount of power) 6 months on and the problem is now in every gear but it comes and goes, if I do about 10 miles in it, it seems to stop. Has this happened to anybody eles and if so how did you cure it,

many thanks

Scott.

Never had that problem with a Daihats. Sound similare to a IIA Landi I once owned though. Used to leack oil out of the rear oil seal, straight onto the clutch assembly. The motor wasn't worth fixing. Every now and then when it sliped too much I'd park it against a tree and slip the clutch in and rev it till it burnt of the oil and bit. Not exactly a permnant solution. Fun though.

Either way, your clutch is shot. Try adjusting it with the knurled knob located by the actuating arm at the bottom of the bellhousing (Just follow the cable) and screw it out - if it has never been done you may well have a fair bit left to go on the thread. They seem to do clutches in from around 70-75k if everyone here is typical...(I changed mine in July at 73k) and when you see the size of the pressure plate, it ain't surprising.

You can also adjust the cable

You can also adjust the cable at the top, where it disappeares into the bulkhead. There is a spring clip (cerclip) around the cable. This can be sliped into one of several slots to tighten, or slacken the cable. Don't worry, it's obviouse when you see it. Just follow the cable up from the bell housing.

Clutch

This sounds exactly like what my Sportrak did when the clutch was wearing out. Sportrak ones seem to wear out quite close to the milage that Daihatsu said they would. they give them 75-80K and thats when they wear out. I had mind replaced at 79K as thats when it got worse and would slip everytime you tried to suddenly accelerate.

How much it costs u for a new clutch depends on if you do it yourself or not. It cost me at a proper clutch place with having a genuine Daihatsu Clutch fitted. Just over £200 which is a good price. Obviously could cost you just under half the price if you bought the clutch kit and did it yourself.
